We had an Apple Day in first grade! We taste-tested 4 different types of apples, discussed their

attributes, and decided on our favorite. We then used this information to write about our apples. We also used our 5 senses to describe apple donuts. The kiddos did a great job of sharing their ideas.

Fourth and fifth grade athletes who represented Jones at the district 4th and 5th grade Cross Country Meet at Woodland Park did a fantastic job! We were so happy the weather cooperated and allowed us to have a great time cheering on our students!

Our Top Ten finishers included:

Maci Taylor (7th place)

Jacob Darrell (3rd place)

All of our athletes did an outstanding job- we are proud of all of you!

The Portage Fire Department visited Jones in September for Fire Prevention Week. They met with every grade level to discuss fire safety with students. They also spent time with our students during lunches to talk with them and answer their questions. We want to thank our first responders for taking their own time to visit our kids and teach them valuable skills!

Our Family Math Night was a big success! Our students got to participate in fun math activities like bowling, measurement, estimation, and war. The Tocayos Taco Truck was there and a portion of the proceeds from the sales went to our PTO. Families also got to enjoy free ice cream sundaes! Students estimated the number of goldfish, marshmallows, and Hershey kisses in containers and the closest guess won those items. It was a wonderful time that was made possible through the grant awarded to Mrs. Gill by the Portage Township Education Foundation!

Join Portage elementary principals Mrs. Klein and Mr. Sopko for Digital Safety for Students Night! This valuable event will include a discussion about steps parents can take to support your children's responsible and safe use of the internet. This is a FREE event with child care provided for school-age children (who will be participating in a fun STEM activity with Mrs. Kelley and Mr. Ramian!). The presentation is for adults only. We hope to see you there!

Parent Conferences will take place on Wednesday, October 18th, from 12:00-3:00 p.m. and 4:00-7:00 p.m. Teachers will send out invitations for parents to sign up for time slots during the week of October 2nd. Each slot will be 15 minutes in length, so it is VERY important that parents arrive for their scheduled conference on time.

Students will not have school on October 18th. They will have asynchronous e-learning (no live lessons) on Thursday, October 19th. Students will also be off of school on Friday, October 20th for Fall Break.

Please be sure to sign up for a time so teachers can update you on your child's progress and so you can ask any questions to help best support your student. We love every opportunity to partner with you to help our kids succeed!

We will be holding our Candy Wars, which will be used to collect candy for our Trick or Trunk event. The Candy Wars will take place from October 9th through 25th. The classroom with the most candy collected (by weight) will win an extra recess with Mrs. Klein!

Our Trick or Trunk event will take place on Thursday, October 26th from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. The Tocayos Taco Truck will be there. This will be an opportunity for our students to wear their Halloween costumes (in lieu of wearing them to school on Oct. 31st). Please RSVP through our post on ParentSquare. We hope to see you there!
