Adrienne Hannan is the Children’s and Youth Services Coordinator at Wellington City Libraries and is also a soldier in the NZ Army. Being a soldier has given Adrienne useful skills and knowledge, and a mental-toughness that translates well into a library environment. The military gets the job done despite the odds and setbacks because the consequences of not achieving the objective can be catastrophic. We receive skilled training to realise, interpret and understand the mission and to achieve it - handy skills in a library setting, where budgets and resources can be tight.

The rules of manoeuvre warfare may seem like an extreme approach to apply to a library, even if sometimes hordes of students on wet or windy days can seem like an enemy invasion to be grappled with, but this humorous and relevant presentation is about taking an overall strategic approach to your working environment - the lie of the land, your over-arching objectives and the resources at your disposal, and everyone coming out winning.
