OCTOBER DYSLEXIA AWARENESS MONTH
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month! This is a 3 minute video about Dyslexia: https://youtu.be/11r7CFlK2sc
Please join us on Tuesday, October 1st to dress in gray which is the official color of dyslexia awareness!
Did you know?......
1. Dyslexia is the most common learning disability. Individuals with this medical condition have difficulty in the areas of language processing.
2. 1 in 5 people suffer from dyslexia.
3. Dyslexia ranges from mild to severe. Around 40% of people with dyslexia also have ADHD. And those with dyslexia use about 5 times more energy to complete mental tasks.
4. Dyslexia is not a disease so there is no cure.
5. Dyslexics do not “see” words backwards. The “b-d” letter reversal for example is mainly caused by deficits in interpreting left and right.
6. Dyslexia does not reflect an overall defect in language, but a localized weakness within the phonologic module of the brain where sounds of language are put together to form words or break words down into sounds.
7. People with dyslexia are usually more creative and have a higher level of intelligence!
8. Those with dyslexia use only the right side of the brain to process language, while non-dyslexics use three areas on the left side of the brain to process language.
9. Children have a 50% chance of having dyslexia if one parent has it. And a 100% chance if both parents have it.
10. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that 15% of the population of the US has dyslexia.

FLU SEASON
Flu Season is upon us so take charge and get in front of it…Remember get a flu vaccination and washing your hands are the best defenses. See attached.
We would like to remind all parents of the importance of keeping sick children home. Recently we have had many students out with Strep Throat, a stomach virus, and a few with the FLU. When a student comes to school ill, he/she can spread illness by coughing, touching his/her nose/mouth and then touching objects that other students come in contact with. Remember that fever is not the only sign of true illness and that fever is usually a late sign of an illness, or an illness that is progressing.
If your child is out sick remember to always send in a note from the medical provider or a parent note.
MISD Health policies are in place to help insure a healthy school where students can learn and grow. Please take a moment to review the exclusions that are attached.
HAND WASHING
Hand washing is one of the easiest and best ways to prevent the spread of disease. Direct contamination of your mucus membranes (eyes, nose and/or mouth) is how many infectious diseases enter your body. So let's work together to decrease the risk of contracting and spreading illnesses by following these three simple rules:
· Wash your hands when they are dirty and before you eat.
· Do not cough or sneeze into your hands (use your sleeve, elbow or shoulder
instead).
· Never put fingers in your eyes, nose or mouth.
Remember...you are responsible for keeping yourself healthy!! Be as nice to yourself as you are to others.
Stay Healthy,
Your MHS Health Team
