Edgewood's Tiger Talk
March 10, 2023
We are committed to our journey of developing EACH child to be an inspired learner and a caring, contributing citizen.
Principal's Update
They say the elementary years are the golden years. And in many ways they are. But that doesn't mean that it's all easy. There are two major stages that can be particularly challenging.
The first is age 5. 5-year olds start to see and understand things with more complexity, but they're still prone to tantrums and meltdowns. The transition from home to school can also be challenging; they do a lot to keep it together all day, follow-directions, etc. By the time they get home, they don't want to listen anymore. What might help you navigate this stage?
1) Make sure your child has some down time afterschool.
2) Set boundaries. "You can be mad, but I won't listen if you yell at me that way."
3) Ask them why they're upset. Often, children at this age feel things are unfair. Listen fully, and then, perhaps, offer another way of seeing the situation.
The second is around age 9. Nine year olds want to assert their independence, and they're also more susceptible to peer pressure. Children who feel less confident are more prone to peer pressure. What can you do to help?
1) Make time to talk and listen to them daily.
2) Encourage/promote friendships and self-confidence by arranging play dates, involving them in youth activities, and coming to school events.
3) Set rules/talk about the ways you expect them to treat people (including you). "You can be mad, but you can't talk to me in that tone."
So if your child is in one of these phases and you're wondering, "What happened?" No, you're not crazy. These phases can be hard. But just like you got through the sleepless nights of infancy, you'll get through these with some patience and empathy.
EHSA Update
The dance is next Friday, March 17th! The kids are pumped, and you all have done FABULOUS job volunteering to help! We only have a few slots left!
Fill the few remaining slots HERE!
Our next meeting is April 4th from 6-7pm. At this meeting we'll plan teacher appreciation week and lay the foundation for next year. PLEASE consider getting involved.
The Fall Picnic, the Bookfair, Fallfest, and the Dance DO NOT happen without the EHSA. And the EHSA doesn't exist without parents who are willing and able to step up. There's a great team of parents, and we could use a few more regulars. Helping to plan Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week is a great way to start.
Hope to see you there!
