Happy Spring Season!
April 24, 2023 IEYMS Castle News
We made it to Spring and our students are happy to be able to spend more time outdoors. When the weather becomes sunny and bright, students want to socialize with their friends, go to local eateries, and take the long route home after school. Those who would normally ride the bus or have car services want to walk home with their friends. Please make sure that your child is clear about your expectations for what they can and cannot do after school. Now is a great time to reinforce the steps your child should take before they decide to change the agreed-upon after-school plan.
Part of our school mission and vision is to engage learners every day in a safe, caring, and joyous learning community. We believe that our school should be a place where students can continue to develop the ability to question, wonder, imagine, lead, and think critically. We also believe in allowing students to make mistakes, self-correct, and develop agency. We spend a lot of time teaching our students about resources that are available to them when there is a problem. Staff is readily available to support children, however, communication is key to problem-solving. We encourage students to seek immediate assistance when there is an issue or concern. While we recognize that students may not always have the answers, physical aggression is an unacceptable approach to addressing peer-to-peer conflicts. Please encourage your child to seek adult support.
We are officially in the final stretch of the 2022-2023 school year. The final exam schedule for the end of June will be announced in May. 8th-grade families can pay the fees for the Holiday Hills trip starting on Monday, April 24, 2023. The PTA will begin collecting 8th-grade dance fees on May 2.
This week's newsletter contains information about the district's summer program registration, the rising grade 9 summer Algebra program, and upcoming events.
As always, please reach out to our school staff should you have questions or need additional support.

New York State Assesment Program
As a part of our balanced assessment system, our schools will participate in the annual New York State Grades 3-8 assessments. A balanced assessment system uses both school-based and state testing to measure student performance. The state assessments are snapshots of moments in time, which, in conjunction with other measures administered by the district and locally at our schools, provide a more complete picture of student learning. The ELA assessment was given on April 19 and 20. The math will be given on May 2 and 3.
We remain committed to addressing the whole child. As such, the state testing results will not be used as the sole means of determining student achievement. The information gleaned from them, combined with the other measures, will help to highlight the content knowledge of our students and inform the instructional programmatic changes that are needed to enhance learning.
Please note that our teachers, staff, and administrators do everything to ensure that students feel comfortable and are prepared to do their best work. Again, like any assessment, we ask our students to simply do all they can. We certainly do not want any of our students to stay home to avoid taking one of these assessments due to fear of not performing well.
We are committed to working closely with you to guarantee your child(ren)’s success, alleviate any fears or anxieties they may have, and encourage you to contact your school principal if you have any questions or concerns about these assessments.
Thank you for your continued partnership in serving our students, and your children, and to work with us to make sure they are successful.
Facts About How Spring Got Its Name 🌸
- 🌱 The spring season gets its name from the verb "spring." It's a nod to the flowers and plants springing up, springing open, and bursting into blossom.
- 🐣 The word itself comes from the Old English word "springan," which means "to leap, burst forth, fly up; spread, grow."
- 🌸 During the 14th century, the word came to describe the spring season, the time when plants wake from their winter sleep and bloom.
- 🌅 Before that, the word "Lent" was used to describe the season: "Originally, spring was known as lent or the lenten season, which came from the Old English which means to make longer. It is no surprise that the season was originally named after the fact that the days were getting longer."
