Correct Your Posture Month
May 2022
Posture Matters
Hunching over at your desk, staring down at your phone or tablet, slumping down on your sofa, and traveling for work all have an impact on your body. Even for someone living an active lifestyle, much of our work life, social life, and home habits add up to more sedentary time than one would think. All of these cause unnecessary strain on many of our bodies' systems. Consequently, poor posture negatively affects how we interact with the space around us, restricts breathing, and weakens muscular and joint structures. With awareness of your posture and movement, you can strengthen joints and muscles, improve organ function, and move more consciously and confidently as you adjust to life’s everyday tasks.
When you think of your overall wellbeing, posture probably does not come to mind. In this edition of the Positive Pulse, we will explore ways to improve our posture and be mindful of our bodies.
Why Good Posture Is Important:
Healthy movement and good posture practiced consistently over time allow you to maintain a healthy posture subconsciously. This is due to repeated and favorable movement and postural cues to the central nervous system. Similarly, poor postural and movement cues will reinforce those patterns and over time could result in musculoskeletal injury.
- Decrease abnormal wear and tear of your joints
- Your muscles work more efficiently
- Improve breathing and cardiorespiratory potential
- Improve musculoskeletal balance and strength
- Improve digestion
Ways to Improve Posture
- Exercise Strengthening your core & back will allow you to hold your body in a straight, upright position. Click here for '12 Exercises to Improve Your Posture.'
- Sit Up Straight Being conscious of how you are sitting (especially if you sit all day for work) will improve your posture.
- Check in with Your Body Simply being aware of your body throughout the day will help you correct your posture and reposition yourself into a more supportive stance. Click here to practice a 2-minute body scan!
- Move! Consider taking a 2 minutes stretch break every 30-45 minutes. Every 90 minutes enjoy a 5-minute mindful walk.
