Head Cheetahs Message

Dear Families,

Happy Memorial Day! It looks like there is a BEAUTIFUL forecast ahead. While enjoying the three day weekend, we hope you will take a moment to reflect on Monday’s holiday. Please join me in sending love to anyone who has lost a friend or family member while serving in the armed forces. Our thoughts are with you. And to those who have friends or family members who are currently serving…. May they all return home safely.

Best,

Joey and Andrea

Cheetahs In Action Cheetahs In Action

This month students are learning about CONFIDENCE. We are teaching, modeling and encouraging students to feel sure of themselves and their abilities. It is that quiet inner knowledge that they are capable of soaring!

Annual Writing Celebration Annual Writing Celebration

This week, we held our annual Writing Celebration in the gym. Student writing portfolios from across the year were on display! In addition to students visiting throughout the week to enjoy one another’s writing, families were invited on Wednesday and Thursday evening to marvel over our student’s growth. We ended the week with a visit and book signings by noted author, Alan Katz. He was amazed by all of the authors right here at Memorial School!

Pawsitive Office Referral Pawsitive Office Referral

A PAWsitive office referral is submitted when a staff member recognizes a student who is going above and beyond to exemplify one of our three school rules - taking care of others, taking care of self, & taking care of things.

Memorial Models Memorial Models

Memorial Models are chosen weekly by their teacher. These students have excelled all week in taking care of themselves, others, and things. The recipients will dine at a VIP table during lunch every Friday!

Order Of The Cheetah Order Of The Cheetah

This week we recognize Mr. Adams, one of our building substitutes and Ms. Carr a first grade long term substitute as the Order Of The Cheetah. Both educators are flexible and willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. They are team players and exude positivity.

Garden Club

This week in garden club was all about weeding. We learned how to look for weeds and why it is important to pick them to help the garden and plants flourish. Our garden beds are looking great!

Garden News

Hello Memorial Families! Please find your student’s grade level below to see our April learning expectations!

Preschool Expectations: Students were expected to explore with voices and movements this month. They tried vocal exploration stories and responded to the “magic word” in the story with the correct sound. They also explored movements during “glue dancing” and “freeze dance””.

Kindergarten Expectations: – Kindergarten students were expected to make a “perfect match” with their singing voices when singing hello to the teacher. They were also expected to sing correct words and show correct movements as we began work on the music for our Kindergarten Show. Finally, they explored movement with various singing games like “Charlie Over the Ocean” and dances like “Superheroes Unite”.

First Grade Expectations: This month, students were expected to read patterns made of the notes “sol” and “mi”. They were also introduced to a new note called “la” and are beginning to learn to read and write that note in combination with the other two. Students also explored instruments in the percussion family this month. They tried an “instrument detective” activity where they identified the best way to play the instrument (hit, shake, scrape).

Second Grade Expectations: This month, students worked on rhythm and composition. Students identified the dotted half note in the classic springtime song “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”. They are now expected to read and write patterns that include the note. They also worked in teams to compose and perform original boomwhacker (tuned plastic tubes) songs. Students were expected to use teamwork to achieve their performance goals!

Third Grade Expectations: Students are working hard to meet expectations in our recorder program! By the end of our unit, students are expected to have earned at least their “green belt” (level 4) in the recorder karate program! Many students have already surpassed this goal, or will meet the goal soon. We have also been learning about instruments in the four families of the orchestra. Students are expected to identify instruments, as well as the family they belong to. Students even participated in the “Instrument Petting Zoo”, where they met high school instrumentalists and got to hold each instrument as they decided whether to play in fourth grade!

Please check out the music room website for more information about the music program. Feel free to reach out at any time by emailing smaldonado@easthamptonct.org.

Summer Math 2023 Summer Math 2023

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It’s hard to believe the end of the school year is right around the corner. It has been a pleasure watching your student grow and progress everyday. This has been an exciting year for elementary math as we embarked on a journey with our new program, Bridges in Mathematics. Our marvelous mathematicians gained a deep understanding of concepts and key skills, engaged in mathematical discourse and persevered to solve complex problems.

You can help your student retain the skills that they have learned by encouraging them to complete the linked grade-level summer math activity packet. Hard copies of grade-level packets will be distributed to students at both Memorial and Center during the next two weeks. You can also get a replacement copy by visiting the front office at either school during the summer or using the links below to print a PDF version.

Memorial and Center School teachers will collect summer math packets when students return to school in the fall and we will plan a fun celebration at that time. Thank you for your support in your student’s education.

Grade-Level Math Packets:

  • Entering First Grade?

  • Entering Second Grade?

  • Entering Third Grade?

  • Entering Fourth Grade?

  • Entering Fifth Grade?

In addition to these packets, there are several other ways to keep up with math over the summer including:

  • Accessing the Bridges Math At Home activities that are organized by grade

  • Utilizing Bridges digital Math Apps

  • Continuing with Reflex Math - a fact fluency program we utilize in grades 2-5. New grade 2 students will receive their Reflex accounts in the fall. You can also create a parent account to check your student’s fact fluency progress.

  • Continuing with FRAX (Fractions) - students build skills and understanding of instructional models to learn about fractions in grades 4-5. New grade 4 students will receive their FRAX accounts in the fall.

Wishing you a safe and relaxing summer,

Lis Ellis (K-2 Math Specialist)
