A Message to the Luther Burbank Community
As we navigate through the school year, we want to take a moment to update you on some new practices and procedures we have implemented to support appropriate student conduct at Luther Burbank.
As our students navigate the challenging journey of middle school, it's crucial to understand their developmental stage. At this age, they are learning to assert their independence, which often means testing limits. It's a natural part of growing up. However, just as they are exploring their boundaries, they also need a stable structure to feel secure and understand what is expected of them.
Consistency and clear boundaries in school help provide this structure. When students know what is expected and understand that the expectations are the same for everyone, it creates a sense of fairness and safety. This environment allows them to focus on learning, both academically and socially.
At the beginning of the school year, we had the opportunity to meet with all our students to discuss these new practices and procedures. Our aim is to foster a positive learning environment that encourages responsibility, respect, and growth among our students.
We have established a clear discipline progression that ensures fair and consistent consequences for inappropriate behavior. These consequences are designed not only to address the immediate issue but also to provide students with opportunities for reflection and personal growth.
Some of the consequences in place include recess detention, recess/lunch detention, and after-school detention. If a student is assigned a detention, parents can expect to receive an email from Mr. Burks or the relevant teacher explaining the reason for the detention. We believe that communication is key in fostering a collaborative partnership between the school and parents.
It's important to emphasize that these steps are being implemented with the best interests of our students in mind. We firmly believe that by addressing behavior concerns early and consistently, we can help our students develop into effective and responsible members of our community and future communities they will be a part of.
We encourage parents/guardians to follow up with their children at home, discussing the importance of positive behavior and reinforcing the values we promote at school. Additionally, in the event that a child is assigned a consequence for their behavior, it is incredibly helpful to have parents/guardians follow up with the child at home. Your support is invaluable in helping us create a safe and nurturing environment for all students.
Thank you for your ongoing cooperation and partnership in ensuring the success and well-being of our students. Visible and consistent solidarity between school and home makes it clear to students that the adults in their lives are dedicated to establishing/maintaining high expectations and supporting them on their journey to meet those high expectations. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.

Spark for German Spring 2024
The German Honor Society at Nashoba RHS is excited to bring our after-school opportunity back to Luther Burbank Middle School this year.
SPARK for German is a bilingual STEM program, where middle schoolers learn about a variety of topics from different STEM fields while also getting an introduction to the German language.
This is the 2nd year we are running the program, which is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade and will take place on the following consecutive Mondays:
1/22, 1/29 and 2/5 from 2:15-3:00 at Luther Burbank. The lessons will build on each other, so ideally, students would attend all three. The program is free of charge and no materials or prior knowledge is necessary.
You can use this form to sign your child up for the 3-week program. In the form you will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have or you can reach out directly to Frau van Toorn: svantoorn@nrsd.net.
Appropriate Footwear Needed for Engineering and Physical Education
As we strive to ensure the safety and well-being of our students during Engineering and Phys Ed classes, we would like to remind you of the footwear requirements.
It is mandatory for students to wear closed-toe sneakers during both Engineering and Phys Ed classes. Unfortunately, Crocs and open-toed shoes, including slides, are not considered safe and appropriate footwear for these activities.
Please ensure that your child comes to school with the proper footwear to participate fully in these classes. Students who do not have the appropriate footwear will not be able to take part in the activities.
We appreciate your cooperation in maintaining a safe learning environment for all students.
Winter Attire and Recess
With the weather becoming increasingly colder, it is critical that students come to school with the proper winter apparel. Staff and students can benefit from the fresh air and outdoor activity. Therefore, we will continue to go outside daily with the exception of inclement weather or when the wind chill temperature drops below 20 degrees. Please help ensure that your child arrives at school with a jacket, hat, and gloves/mittens. Layers are perfect.
If you need assistance in obtaining winter apparel for your child, please contact Nurse Ana at 978-365-5629 or via email aamaral@nrsd.net
Thank you for your support in ensuring your child is adequately prepared
Reporting a Student Absent or Tardy
Please be reminded that we request that you notify the school if your child is going to be late or absent. You can do so easily by emailing LBMSattendance@nrsd.net. Please feel free to call Nurse Ana at 978-365-5629 if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
