Welcome to the new and improved library!
We were very busy in the library this summer! We weeded old books, reorganized shelves, and adopted a "bookstore model." Instead of the old-fashioned arrangement where all the fiction is organized alphabetically by the author's last name and the nonfiction is organized according to the Dewey Decimal System, we separated the collection by genre and topic. Now, when a student says, "Where are all the scary books?" or "I want to read a funny book," instead of searching through all the shelves, we can direct them to the Scary or Humor sections to browse the genre. Our goal is to help students more easily find the books that interest them. Be sure to ask your student about genres--you may be surprised at what they know! Take a look at our new genre signs below and perhaps challenge your student to check out a book in a genre that is new to them.
New comfy seating, too!
We were also fortunate to get some new comfy chairs. They are very popular with students during their library checkout time.
Cozy spots for serious readers!
The oversized chairs are perfect for enjoying reading time.
The only thing better than reading a book is sharing it with a friend!
Swishing
A big thank you goes out to Jermayne Monroe and his family for the donation of this great book written by family member Victoria Monroe. Anyone who is looking to read a great sports story that focuses on inclusion and acceptance, this is the book for you!

How can I support literacy?
Giving kids the opportunity to choose books that interest them is one of the best ways to encourage literacy. Another important aspect of literacy development is home ownership of books. To help support both of these aspects of literacy, North will be participating in ALL FOR BOOKS, a Scholastic program that asks if students want to "round up" and donate their change. (Students can always choose to keep their change!)
All funds collected from ALL FOR BOOKS stay at North. We will use the funds to provide book fair certificates to students who might otherwise not be able to shop at the book fair. As an added bonus, Scholastic will donate matching funds to the Scholastic Possible Fund which provides literacy opportunities across the country.
What's an eWallet?
A Scholastic eWallet allows you to use a credit card to set up a pre-paid account for your child's book fair purchases.
- No need to send cash or check to school!
- Your child tells us they have an eWallet. We look it up on the register and charge your child's purchases to the eWallet.
- They can't spend more than the amount in the eWallet.
- Any remaining balance at the end of the fair stays in your child's account and can be used for future Scholastic or book fair purchases.
See you at the book fair!!
Shop 'til you drop!! Happy reading!
Scholastic Dollars put to use in the library!
For each Scholastic Book Fair that North hosts, we earn Scholastic Dollars that can be spent through the Scholastic Dollars Catalog. This summer we used some of our Scholastic Dollars to purchase new browsing bins for our picture books. Thanks to everyone who shops at the Scholastic Book Fairs--you helped us create great library spaces for our kids!
