Principal's Message
"I want it NOW! ~Veruca Salt- Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory
Many know that I am an avid movie watcher. A character that came to mind when thinking of the message for the school community this month was Veruca Salt in the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Veruca Salt's character moved through every scene demanding what she wanted when she wanted it, leaving no room for consideration of others and what they might want or need. She continued behaving in this manner until she fell into the 'bad egg' chute.
I initially believed this character over-exaggerated the degree to which anyone could be so self-absorbed. I thought there is no way a person can go around making demands believing people will just give them what they want. I have found that belief to have been proven wrong for children and adults. The deeper issue surrounding Veruca's character is that she felt it was okay to conduct herself that way. The fact is, real life in no way mirrors the movie, and we are not rewarded for rude, inconsiderate, and selfish behavior.
A major part of our jobs as educators is to prepare our children to be the future. One of the ways we do that is by establishing character expectations that will benefit them when we are no longer here to guide them. "Be honest... be accountable... be respectful... be compassionate..." are just a few of the traits that we encourage daily. 'Walking the talk' as adults is equally as important. What we seek and how we go about accomplishing it is what children see and, thereby, what they do.
As a school administrator, I am presented with problems every day. From the smallest matters to the most significant, it seems someone is always waiting for me to address an issue. My intentions to remedy every need are balanced by there being many needs. I recognize that reality may be hard for students to understand as they are still maturing. But, my expectations for the adults are to BE what we want our children to BE by demonstrating respect for all others, following rules, guidelines, and procedures, and treating everyone the way that they want to be treated (if not better)- even if you want something as much as Veruca!
