Heather Collen
Hello there! My name is Heather Collen and I teach English 10. This is currently my 9th year teaching English 10 here at NPHS. We began the year writing a personal narrative essay. We then moved into learning how to write an Abstract by summarizing and reacting to an article. Currently, we are at the end of one of our new field testing curriculums. This first curriculum is called StudySync. I am excited to see what the student’s opinions and viewpoints of both of these options are to help the English team decide which one to go with in the future.
With StudySync, we are exploring the overall concepts of why communication is important and why words matter. To do this, we will be reading selections from poems and short stories to write a literary analysis essay focusing on how the power of language is demonstrated in each selection we read.
After StudySync, we will move on to our second field testing curriculum called MyPerspectives. This unit will revolve around the concept of outsiders, outcasts, and whether or not people need to belong. This unit will focus on elements of argumentative writing which will lead us into our research essay unit. We should then end the year with our book club unit.

In English 11 and Advanced English 11, we have spent the last few weeks working our way through F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic, The Great Gatsby. Students tend to enjoy the novel as it is full of plot twists and turns. With Gatsby, we also were able to field test some of the new curriculum the district is trying out, focusing on analysis and close reading. Students analyzed the different characters in the novel and created analysis posters for each major character. In the next couple of weeks, we are going to be focusing on grammar practice for the ACT and will begin our nonfiction and research paper unit.
Micheline Hoatson
Hi all I’m Micheline Hoatson and I teach Psychology, Sociology, and World History. This is my 12th year here at the high school. Sociology is a term class and will be wrapping up this week. We just completed applying current social issues to the 3 perspectives of Sociology. Students chose a social issue that they wrote about and presented to the class resulting in ping pong conversations. These students had great conversations and learned others perspectives on the issue. Loved these kids and the respect they have for one another. They also had some fun presenting different decades and/or cultures during our culture unit. They had to dress in attire of the decade/culture as they presented. Here are a few of those
presentations.
My Psychology class is also a term class so will start up March 16th . They will begin learning about what psychology is and the many careers one can adventure into. They will also learn about individual behavior, motivation and emotion, personality, mental health and therapy. Students will start the term with an ongoing assignment about themselves and will end the term by relating 4 theories of psychology to their own personality. Look out for some pretty cool superhero psychology.
My World History class has been working hard learning about the Revolutions. They competed with the other World History class on designing a Renaissance Bulletin Board. Both classes were very competitive and did a great job so both were rewarded with ice cream and brownies. Up next for them are the world wars.

Greetings from the art department! We are in the middle of Youth Art Month and art show season. Our annual All-Area Student Art Show is currently hanging at the Prairie Arts Center, and it looks incredible. Go check out artwork from NPHS students as well as students from 5 other Nebraska area high schools. The show hangs until March 31.
In the classroom, we are wrapping up term 3 with some really awesome work from really awesome students. Drawing 1, Art 2, and Art History 2 students have worked hard this term and learned a lot.
Angie Petersen
Welcome to freshmen Physical Science from Mrs. Petersen! The first part of our semester we focus on physics concepts describing the motion of objects. This includes speed, velocity, acceleration, and momentum. We discussed and demonstrated examples to understand Newton’s Laws of Motion. We are currently finishing up our unit on Energy. We are discussing the types of potential energy, the transfer of energy within a system, and kinetic energy. Students examined the types of potential energy including gravitational, chemical, and elastic potential energy, and examples of each of them. During labs students demonstrated the transfer of energy from one form to another within a system and between objects. After break we will start our chemistry units!

Hello all! Here in the World Language Department we're getting crazy for March Madness, however not the one about the basketball tournament. I'm talking about Locura De Marzo in our Spanish classes and Manie Musicale in our French classes. It's a global song selection where our students vote on their favorite song in a head-to-head competition bracket of 16 songs in either Spanish or French. The songs are newer songs from the previous year from artists of Spanish or French speaking countries. This competition has students from schools from all over the world. The French "Manie Musicale" has 471,986 students from 4331 schools, all 50 states, 13 provinces and territories and 23 countries, Wow! Our students are enjoying the variety of culture this adds to the classroom and brings excitement, too!

This year girls' tennis team consists of 30 young ladies.
Nine of those young ladies are seniors! We are looking forward to a season of growth, laughs, and building the lady bulldog tennis team.
Also, warm weather and no winds would be nice! I know wishful thinking.
