National History Day
National History Day (NHD) is a competition among students around the United States. This competition gives each group of students a topic or historical figure to write about and see what they did for the history of the United States. This competition is available to students in 6th-12th grade. Students can become writers, filmmakers, web designers, play-writers, and artists.
The students chosen to compete at regionals at IUP are as follows:
Taylor Lefebure
Joey Pavelko, Caleb Stivanelli
Camryn Dumn, Adrianna Farrell
Zoey Baron
Gary Smith, Josh Fetzer
Students that place at regionals will move on to compete at the state competition in Harrisburg.
"National History Day is a project that has been done here at Northern Cambria for many years. As a student, I competed under the direction of Dr. Mark Previte. It is exciting that the Honors History students get to participate in this extensive research project. I really believe the skills they learn with help them in college and later in life. Adobe Illustrator Spiderman by Haley Pattison
I made this cartoon is Mrs. Perkovich's class using Adobe Illustrator. The process involved using tools such as the pen tool, paintbrush, curvature tool, and adjusting the fill, opacity, and stroke. First and foremost, I found and selected a base. Then, I used the pen tool to recreate a base outline of the character. From there, I separated differentiating areas based on their colored parts, and filled them in with the colors respectively. After that, it was time to add details, such as the lines on the suit. Then, I created a second layer, to add shading, such as casting a shadow and adding highlights to areas like below the neck, and in the eyes. Then, I added a gradient blue background, and set the opacity to 10%. I also decided to add a screen overlay, and I did this in the same process as the gradient background. Then, I signed it with my name using the word art tool, and the drawing was complete.

Boys Varsity Basketball
The boys varsity basketball team had a great year. Basketball is a very competitive sport that requires the utmost hard work and dedication. These individuals don't just work hard, they have to practice hard, and prepare hard. They practice everyday, spend time outside of school to practice, and travel all over the area to play! Basketball practices start in the summer, making it a nearly year round sport. This sport isnt only a good way to get good exercise but, its also a good way to become close to people and start new friendships with new people!
This year's varsity basketball team did an amazing job versus a very strong conference. They had a record of 4-11. The seniors this year are Travis Lee, Zachary Rummell, and Jorden Wise. The starters this year were, Tyler Bearer, Mathew Sedlock, Michael Hoover, Jorden Wise, and Zach Taylor.
Whats your favorite thing about Basketball?
Isak Kudlawiec- “My favorite thing about Basketball was getting to play with my friends.”

Classroom Spotlight- Welding with Mr. Link
Welding with Mr. Link teaches you the basics of welding. This class covers spot welding, arc welding, and oxyacetylene welding. You learn how to run beads with arc and cut with an acetylene torch. The class is a 9 week class that I definitely recommend taking. This class has motivated my future career path of becoming a welder after high school.
“I enjoy seeing the kids go from one emotional mindset to another, like the fear they get from having this much power by using an oxy acetylene cutter. It scares them to use it, but then when they get the hang of it, it relieves a lot of stress from them and they get used to using the machine. It's just the self satisfaction I enjoy from it!" - Mr. Link

Psych Brain Dissection
Earlier this month the students in Mrs. Kline’s Psychology class dissected a sheep’s brain for three days. This gave the students a very hands on method to learn about the anatomy of a brain and better visualize the parts they had been learning about on paper. Students had to wear protective gloves and protective goggles to protect them from any stray material. Each day, of the three days they worked on this, they focused on a different part of the brain. At the end of the day it was a great way to put the paper anatomy charts of brain parts into a 3D reality and into the students' brains for good!
Brain facts
- The front lobe of the brain is our control panel, basically it controls our emotional expressions and problem solving and our language.
- Temporal Lobe of the brain is what controls our hearing and audio
- Parietal lobe- It functions in processing sensory information regarding the location of parts of the body as well as interpreting visual information and processing language and mathematics.
