Corona High School - A Tradition of Excellence Since 1896
Greetings, Panther Families
We've had another busy, but great week at Corona High School! Thank you to all our families that made it out for Back to School Night to meet your teachers and to those who made it to my princpal's welcome as we kicked off the evening! I know your time is valuable, so we really appreciate you making the time. To those who weren't able to make it out due to other commitments, please do not hesitate to reach out to your student's teachers or counselor should you have any questions.
This past week, we hosted 18 visiting teachers from Shanghai for two days (August 28th and 29th) as they were interested in learning about our overall education system, but for us [Corona High School] specifically they wanted to learn more about our course offerrings with a focus on STEM/CTE. They were very impressed with the wide variety of opportunities we offer our students. As I shared at BTSN, what I loved hearing the most about their visit was how respecful and polite our students were.
There are more details near the end of this Panther Prowl about Jess Hill, but we hosted a reception yesterday (August 29th) evening to honor him (Corona High School Class of 1925 and WWII Navy Veteran) and the renaming of Panther Stadium. His son, Jess Hill, Jr. attended and was very grateful of the honor. He, his wife, and other family members will be at tonight's football game as we unveil the Jess Hill Stadium banner at the 50-yard line before kick off. Be sure to join us!

Engineering
- Our juniors in PLTW Engineering have been conducting research on pioneering technologies and had the opportunity to present to their fellow classmates in Mr. Lee's class.
- Lizette Martinez, Class of 2019, began an internship with Cal-Draulics (the largest aerospace hydraulic manufacturer in the United States) over the summer. She made such a great impression on the organization, that they offered her full-time employment! Such a great partnership with Cal-Draulics, opening the potential for many more success stories! These are some of the great benefits available to our students completing our STEM/CTE pathways!

NJROTC
- NJROTC is preparing for many exciting and challenging field trips to make 2019-20 another memorable year for our cadets! Our first trip will be Neptune Olympics on the beautiful beach at Coronado Island where competition includes boat races in the bay, physical fitness on the beach, Search and Rescue, water survival, and sandcastle building. Our finest cadets will compete against various other ROTC units throughout Southern California, having fun and making friends who share a common interest.
- Our Drill Teams are prepared for their first Drill Meet competition at Santiago High School on November 2nd. Other scheduled meets include the Pacifica meet on November 16th and Murrieta Mesa on December 7th.
- Sports days are always competitive and fun and our first one will be held at Troy High School in Fullerton on September 28th, followed by another great sports day at La Sierra high School on November 2nd.
- Color Guard details have been scheduled and begin to get busy very soon. We are honored to be attending the Corona Naval Weapons Station to conduct a Change of Command and Retirement ceremony Color Guard for the Commanding Officer at the Corona Naval Weapons Station on September 6th. We also look forward to covering all our home games, as well as community and school support as needed. Always ready, willing, and able.
- NJROTC is always looking for individuals who desire a challenge, have an interest in building leadership skills, want to be part of a family structure and organization filled with pride, respect and fun while receiving PE credit. You may contact 1st Sgt Zinn USMC/Ret (jzinn@cnusd.k12.ca.us) or Capt. Dale USN/Ret (jdale@cnusd.k12.ca.us) for more information regarding this amazing opportunity for your student.
Visual and Performing Arts
AP Studio Art
Katie Castro, Class of 2020, says: "I took AP Studio Art because I have always been passionate about art. I feel you should only take the class if you have a passion for art regardless of your skill level. Often times the class would challenge me because it forced me to explore different mediums and techniques that I was not familiar with, but soon appreciated. I am more inspired by romantic fantasy images, as well as giving some story or meaning behind my characters. I am interested in different art styles, but I especially love Pre-Raphaelite art of the 1800's. I also tend to draw more female figures in my art because it's what I'm comfortable drawing, but would like to focus on exploring more male characters to build upon my drawing strengths. Overall, the class helped solidify my love for art and focus on it as a career."
Jameleth “Jam” Montoya, Class of 2020, says: "My inspiration for the pieces I created is simply the people around me. I try to add the emotion and message via colors, shapes, and facial expressions. I also get inspired from My own life experiences in a way to share my story and speak through art.”
Theater
Our first production of the year will debut on November 7th in our Performing Arts Center. We held auditions for the fall show, Almost, Maine, with 59 students auditioning, and another 18 students interviewed to be a part of the design team. The finalized company list went out last night and is displayed below. There are 70 students in the company, directed by Ms. Horn and 8 alumni of the program. Congratulations to the cast and crew of Almost, Maine!

Athletics
Fall Sports
Football: Our first game last week was well-attended and although the outcome wasn't what we would have wanted, there were a lot of positives for our team moving forward and giving us a lot of potential. Although an emotional game (our first one played since the loss of #17 John Anaya, whose jersey rested on the west field goal post), I absolutely loved the school spirit that was in abundance all night and I am looking forward to our Red C (student section) being out in full effect tonight! We host Riverside Poly at 7:00 pm with our Jess Hill dedication before kick off.
Girls Volleyball: Congratulations to senior Logan Schroeder for being selected as a member fo the All-Tournament Team at the Citrus Valley Blackhawk Classic. Logan is also on our cheer squad!
Misc: I am excited to announce that we are officially a lacrosse school! Our very own Coach Suds (of Corona Soccer glory) and Coach Bowers (of Panthers Wrestling glory) will be coaching the boys and girls teams.
If you or your student have questions about athletics, please reach out to our Assistant Principal of Athletics, Jeff Stevens (jeffrey.stevens@cnusd.k12.ca.us). His office can be found in the main gym. Also, see coaches contact list below.
Jess Hill Stadium
"Scholar….all-around Athlete.…successful Coach.…revered Legend. Before becoming a legend at USC, Jess Hill was an area legend, playing five sports at Corona High School and excelling at four sports at Riverside Community College. Jess was known at USC as “Mr. Trojan”. Beginning as a track competitor at USC, he set a record of 25’ 7/8” in the long jump. In football, he played on Troy’s 1928 National Championship team and in the Rose Bowl in 1930. He batted .389 for the Trojans in baseball and led the conference in hitting. Jess went on to play in the Major Leagues for the Yankees, Senators, and Athletics for nearly a decade after college. During the off season he coached at Corona High School and Riverside Junior College. Returning to USC after four years in the Navy during WWII, Jess was hired as the track coach. For two years, his squads were undefeated and won the NCAA Championship both years. From 1951-56 Jess was USC’s football coach and led his team to a Rose Bowl Championship in 1953. He became the Athletic Director in 1957 and held the position until 1972. During his tenure, USC won 29 NCAA titles, a U.S College record that has remained untouchable. Jess was named the Athletic Director of the Decade in 1967, and received the prestigious Corbett Award from the National Association of Coaches and Athletic Directors in 1972. He passed away on August 31, 1993 at the wonderful age of eighty-six. Jess Hill was truly a Riversider and Trojan of Excellence."
Please join us at 6:30 pm in Jess Hill Stadium as we reveal our new banner and share a little bit about Mr. Hill. The Jess Hill family will join us at the 50-yard line for the presentation. We will then take on Riverside Poly and go for the victory! RAWR!!!
