LASD Virtual Learning Update
Phase Two Launch
The district officially launched Virtual School Phase 2 last week. Los Altos School District is an organization that believes in lifelong learning for teachers, staff and students alike, and in Phase 2 we will continue to improve our student-centered approach to virtual learning and its offerings to ensure all students succeed.
Sandra McGonagle, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, provided a few highlights of Phase 2.
Communication: Parents can expect a weekly email from TK-6 grade classroom teachers or unit overviews from 7-8 grade teachers. Teachers will provide feedback on student performance for critical assignments completed during virtual school.
Instruction: In addition to several instructional videos, teachers will provide multiple opportunities for live group instruction and live/office hour support each week.
Classroom Community Building: All students will have multiple opportunities for live classroom community building.
In alignment with guidance from the California Department of Education, students will receive credit/no credit grades on the final report card this year. Teachers will continue to provide detailed feedback on student learning progress through 1-1 check ins, standards-based scores, rubric scores, quiz scores and more. These will be posted for parents to view in Google Classroom, Power School or other tools your child's teacher uses to provide feedback and progress.
Our administrative team is formulating a plan to close out the end of the current school year smoothly and honor our students' accomplishments. Although the specific guidance from state and local officials to safely open school in the fall for the 2020-21 school year is currently unclear, our team is developing a variety of possible plans to ensure strong student learning continues.
We want to thank our entire community for its partnership that enabled our quick transition to distance learning. It takes a village to educate our students and the strength of our parent-teacher partnership is contributing to strong student achievement in this very difficult time.

LCAP Update
Per Governor Newsom's Order on April 27, the deadline to complete an update to the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) has been extended to December 31, 2020. The LCAP is a tool for school districts to set goals, plan actions and leverage resources to meet those goals to improve student outcomes. The deadline extension will give all districts in California more time to gather valuable feedback from parents and teachers regarding the long term educational goals for the district. For more information on LASD's draft LCAP goals for the 2020-23 school years, please review the presentation for agenda item H.3. from our February 10, 2020 board meeting.
Facilities Planning Update
The Board of Trustees directed the Board President, Bryan Johnson, to draft a letter to the Bullis Charter School Board proposing a 2-year extension to the current facilities agreement with the charter school. The current agreement provides facilities for BCS at the Egan Junior High and Blach campuses for a total of up to 1,111 students and expires at the end of the 2020-21 school year.
Without an agreement in place, the two parties would be required to re-enter the often contentious, annual Proposition 39 process by November 1, 2020 to determine another facilities arrangement for the 2021-22 school year.
Superintendent Jeffrey Baier highlighted three issues resulting from the pandemic crisis that complicate future facilities planning for a long term agreement with the charter school, including currently unknown state and local requirements for social distancing on school campuses for future school years; financial implications resulting from the economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis; and restrictions on in-person meetings limiting the opportunities for public feedback on any facilities proposals.
The LASD Board has been working on scenario analysis from the community engagement process that involved many months of public feedback from LASD and BCS parents and community members. While the Board hoped to come to a solution this school year, all board members expressed a need to understand how the pandemic will affect facilities requirements, instructional needs and financial realities to formulate a well-designed plan for the future. The Board also universally expressed the need for full public engagement for this important decision regarding facilities use into the future.
