WEBSTER PAWPRINTS December 2023/January 2024
NOTES FROM OUR PRINCIPAL-Mr. Brad Clark
🎄 Happy Holidays!!
We are excited to be holding our holiday music program again this year for grades 3,4,5 and 4/5 chorus! Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade classes will be holding a spring concert during our school carnival in May. We are having a special holiday lunch on December 21st. The students all dress so nice and look so GREAT for the holiday concert that we think it will be great for them to dress in their holiday best for school on that day. We will be decorating the tables and playing some holiday music to make the lunch special for the students.
Pottery Night: It was GREAT to see so many families at Webster making beautiful pottery projects! A special THANK YOU to Miss Babino and PTO for making this event possible again. I would also like to thank the many other volunteers who helped.
Parent/Teacher Conferences: Thank you to all the families that came to P/T conferences in November. We will be holding our next parent/teacher conferences on February 8th.
Assessments: Our teachers will be assessing all our students in reading and math again in January. They will use this information to help them adjust and guide instruction for each student. Each student will be reading one-on-one with their teacher as they calculate their reading levels. We do this assessment 3 times a year with every student. We use this information to make sure every student is being taught reading at their specific instructional level. Students in grades 2-5 will also be taking the STAR reading and math assessment. This assessment is done on their computers and you should be receiving their results with report cards or during parent/teacher conferences.

Students should report to their assigned location 15 minutes before the start of their program. Please take your child’s jacket with you to the gym after you drop them off in their classrooms/media center. We are going to dismiss all of the students from the gym after their program. AT HOME READING
We need your help! Reading instruction at school is only one part of your child’s learning to become a better reader. Reading at home, on their own or with a parent, is equally as important. Please encourage your children to enjoy a book for at least 20 minutes a day. You will enjoy seeing their growth!
20 VERY IMPORTANT MINUTES:
Webster School would like each of our students to read or be read to every night for at least 20 minutes at home. The following example will give you an idea of how important those 20 minutes can be.
Child A reads 20 minutes each night for 5 nights a week.
Child B reads only 4 minutes each night for 5 nights a week.
Child A will read for 100 minutes a week while Child B only reads 20 minutes.
Child A will read 400 minutes per month and Child B reads only 80 minutes per month.
During the 9 months of school Child A will get 3,600 minutes of reading while Child B only gets 720 minutes.
Child A practices reading the equivalent of 10 whole school days a year. Child B reads the equivalent of only 2 whole school days.
If this pattern where to continue from grades 1-6, by the end of sixth grade, Child A will have read the equivalent of 60 whole days of school while Child B has only read the equivalent of 12 schools days over the six years.
Some questions for Parents to ponder:
Which student would you expect to read better?
Which student would you expect to know more?
Which student would you expect to have a better vocabulary?
Which student would you expect to do better in school?
Shouldn’t your child read or be read to for 20 minutes each night?
