Finding that you'd like some individual or small group help with Canvas? Want to take your instruction in Canvas to the next level but have questions to get started? Sign up for specialized, individual Canvas course creation support! Reasons you may sign up are (but are not limited to):
- You don't know how to do something in Canvas that you used to do in itslearning.
- You want to try something new but need help getting started.
- You're unsure about the best way to blend Canvas into your classroom or set up online learning.
- You would like to learn more about a specific tool in Canvas and what it can do for your instruction.

We are excited to partner teachers with Mandy Froehlich, consultant with Advanced Learning Partnerships, who passionately encourages educators to create innovative change in their classrooms. An experienced Director of Innovation and Technology, technology integrator, and teacher, she has experience at many levels of the organizational structure. Her interest lies in reinvigorating and re-engaging teachers back into their profession, as well as what’s needed to support teachers in their pursuit of innovative and divergent thinking and teaching.
Curriculum Push
The curriculum push will occur throughout the week of August 15, 2022. 2022-2023 courses will be available during that week. An August 10, 2022, Shifting to Canvas newsletter will highlight where to find curriculum in Canvas.
Canvas Professional Learning
The Canvas Professional Development Course has reopened. Pay is no longer available for module completion.
The modules from the Canvas Professional Development Course are also individually available in Canvas Commons as a teacher reference. You may import these modules into your sandbox to explore.
Accessing and Importing the Modules
- Click on the link provided at the bottom of the newsletter for the desired module.
- A preview screen is available to view the contents of the module.
- Details provide a description of the module, who shared it (author), and the account (HCPS).
- The right hand part of the screen allows for the user to import the module to a course [1], add the module to favorites [2], and copy the resource link for sharing [3].
To import the module, select import/download and click on the desired course. The module will appear at the bottom of modules in the selected course. Teachers will have full access to all module content.

- Digital Tools and Resources: Canvas Integration
In what ways can digital tools and resources enhance student learning? What digital tools and resources are approved for student use, and how do these digital tools integrate into Canvas?
- Using Canvas Assignments
Canvas Assignments allow teachers to set up a variety of assessment options for student learning. In this module, explore how to create Assignments and apply a wide range of settings and submission types, including how to add new or existing rubrics.
- Advance Use of Canvas Page
Pages store content and educational resources that are part of a course or group but don’t necessarily belong in an assignment. In this module, explore advanced features of page that include how to insert interactive media, how to set-up student page-only collaborations, and how to send a copy of a page to another HCPS instructor.
- How is the Canvas Interface Simplified for Elementary?
The Canvas for Elementary view provides a simplified look and experience for young learners. HCPS grades K-5 courses will be set with the Canvas for Elementary interface. In this module, learn about the Homeroom dashboard, the My Subjects course feature, the Schedule, and Important Dates.
- Manual Migration
Teachers will be preparing their active itslearning courses for canvas migration and manually migrating select content to their OneDrive.
- Tools For All and Canvas
Are you wondering how the Tools for All extensions will work with Canvas? In this session, explore how Canvas and Tools for All work together to empower all students, including those with specialized learning needs, to interact with course content, enabling greater independence and engagement. This module will explore how Read & Write (literacy tools), EquatIO (math/science tools), and OrbitNote (pdf annotation tools) can be integrated in Canvas.
- Using Canvas Commons
Commons is a learning object repository that enables educators to find, import, and share resources. A digital library full of educational content, Commons allows Canvas users to share learning resources with other users as well as import learning resources into a Canvas course. In this session module, search for, favorite, and import resources that support your curriculum. Then, share one of your own Canvas resources to Commons!
- Using Canvas ePortfolio
Teachers can build a learning partnership with students when using digital portfolios. In this session, explore the Canvas provided ePortfolio, add and manage content, and set goals for student growth with ePortfolio.
- Using Canvas “New Quizzes”
Use Quizzes to create quizzes with question types that include Categorization, File Upload, Formula, Matching, Multiple Choice, Ordering, Essay, Fill in the Blank, Multiple Answer, Numeric, and True/False. In this module, learn how to build New Quiz items, navigate Settings preferences, find Reports, and use Moderate for individual student needs.
- Using Canvas Studio
Teachers will be introduced to all the features of Canvas Studio, a media tool that allows students and instructors to upload, create, edit, manage, share and discuss audio and video files.
- Using Mastery Paths for Differentiated Learning
Did you use itslearning Learning Paths? Then this session is for you! Canvas MasteryPaths allow instructors to configure differentiated learning content that is automatically delivered to students based on their individual source assignment scores. Any graded assignment, graded discussion, or graded quiz may be used as the source content for a MasteryPath. Be sure to take the Assignments, Discussions, and New Quizzes session modules before you participate in MasteryPaths.
- A Day in the Life
Shift in thinking from exploring and understanding to designing and implementing. Hear teacher voices, see modeled lessons, and begin to design how your class will work in the Canvas platform.
