Substitute Authorization:

Prairie Lakes AEA is offering a 15-hour course that would allow an individual to be a substitute teacher. Those completing this course would be authorized to substitute teach in a elementary, middle school, junior high school, or high school for no more than five consecutive days in one job assignment. An individual who holds a Paraeducator Certificate AND completes this course will be authorized to substitute ONLY in the special education classroom in which the individual paraeducator is employed (elementary, middle school, junior high school, or high school) for no more than five consecutive days and no more than 10 days in a 30-day period.

Full participation in all instructional sessions and completion of asynchronous hours (outside of the face-to-face sessions) of collaborative learning and assignments are required for this course. 100% participation, attendance and internet access is required.

The four core components of the course are Classroom Management, Strategies for Learning, Diversity and Ethics.

• This program is targeted especially for persons with an Associate's Degree or higher or 60 semester hours through a college or university.
• An individual who holds a paraeducator certificate without a degree and completes the Substitute Authorization course will be authorized to substitute ONLY in the special education classroom in which the individual paraeducator is employed full time for no more than five consecutive days and no more than 10 days in a 30-day period.
• The age requirement of 21 years of age for a substitute authorization.

Dates/Times: Face-to-face sessions on January 4 and 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. with an hour of lunch. *Snow date of February 6. Full participation in all instructional sessions and completion of a minimum of 4.5 asynchronous hours of collaborative learning and assignments are required for this course. 100% participation and attendance and internet access is required.

Cost: License Renewal credit is $100.00. Additional paperwork and fees payable to the Board of Educational Examiners when applying for the license.
