La Mesa Update

November is a time of gratitude. I am grateful for the opportunity to be principal of the greatest junior high there is. I am grateful for our students. They bring energy and fun to our campus. I am grateful for our teachers. They put their heart and soul into every lesson and love our students unconditionally. I am grateful for our classified staff. They work hard to make sure students and teachers are supported each and every day. They are wonderful role models for our students. I am grateful for the parents and guardians of our students. Thank you for sharing your most precious children with us. We are grateful for the trust you place in us and the partnership we have with you.

We need your help in reinforcing the expectation of appropriate language on campus. This is an email sent to all students by Principal Krantz on Friday:

Hello My Amazing Lobos,

I am so proud of the special place that La Mesa is. We have a beautiful, diverse campus of students, staff who love and want the best for you, a well-maintained campus with a custodial team that wants you to have a clean, safe place to go to school, and a culture of positivity.

I am concerned, however, about the increased use of racial and gender slurs on our campus. Racial and gender slurs are being used both casually and as a way to harass others. I have received several concerns from students that feel very uncomfortable and unsafe hearing these words used by others.

It is NEVER ok to use racial and gender slurs, or words that put down anyone based on race, gender identity, sexual identity, religion, appearance, or ethnicity. No one can give you permission to use these types of negative words. And being a member of any of these groups does not give you a pass to use any of these slurs.

Many of you do not understand the weight and impact of these words.

Thank you for doing your part in making our campus a safe and comfortable place for ALL.

Our teachers will also be addressing this issue with their classes next week. Hopefully with all of us in the same page and working together, we can ensure La mesa is a safe and comfortable place for all.

Both of these students are semester long classes.

Our food pantry is open and students can access it before school, brunch and lunch. We have a variety of items including canned veggies, cereal, dry pastas, beans, toothpaste, and more. Ask your scholar to visit Mrs. Castellanos in the HOWL Hut (Room 513) to check out the pantry.

We are also hosting a Thanksgiving Food Drive. We appreciate any items you can donate.
