Update on Community Engagement for Facilities
As you may know, LASD initiated a Community Engagement Process in May 2019 to engage the public in finding a solution to house Bullis Charter School in the long term. Jessica Speiser, President of the LASD Board provided an update from the Project Team yesterday evening. The Project Team consists of Board members and staff from LASD, as well as a BCS Board member, which has been working with a third-party facilitator to publicize and prepare for the upcoming community charrettes, where community members will review previously considered facilities scenarios and generate new ideas.
The first charrette will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, September 25 from 6:30-8:30 pm in the Blach Multipurpose Room. If you cannot join us tomorrow, we will hold a second charrette on Saturday, October 5 from 9:30-11:30 am. There is no need to attend both charrettes as the format will be the same for each one.
To publicize the charrettes, members of the LASD and BCS boards have presented information about the charrettes in small group meetings for LASD PTAs, community organizations, neighborhood groups and the Bullis Boosters Club. Additionally, the Team has advertised these events in the Town Crier, on Facebook, Nextdoor, through emails and in school and community newsletters. We have also received a few new ideas and proposals from the community regarding a long term solution.

Teachers Hone Their Craft through Professional Development
LASD hires the best and brightest teachers and invests in their ongoing success by providing many opportunities for professional development and continuous growth, which is why student achievement in our district is among the best in the state. Yesterday evening, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, Sandra McGonagle, provided an overview of this Friday's Professional Development Day (PDD) for LASD teachers with a student-centered approach. "Our goal as educators is not to just teach information, but to engage students in their own learning, consistently analyze their understanding and learn how they learn to support their success. PDD allows us to work together as an educational team to ensure every student excels to the highest standards," Mrs. McGonagle explained.
Next Steps towards New School Site
After a public hearing regarding the new school site, the Board voted unanimously to continue proceeding with the property acquisition. After years of public input from task forces, committees and the community, LASD is excited to move forward with a win-win for our students and community to acquire a new school, park and recreational facilities to serve generations to come. Through a unique collaboration with the City of Mountain View, the District will offset the purchase price of the property by over $127 million. A Transfer of Development Rights program will garner over $79 million in funds to the District from local developers. In addition, park-in-lieu funds from the city towards the creation of a neighborhood park and other financial contributions from developers offset the sale price by an additional $48 million. LASD will pay less than $28 million for 9.65 acres of land: under $3 million per acre.
