W.I.N. Time
Fueled by a delicious Bibber BBQ meal, our teachers spent the professional learning day crunching data. Our district is using a screening tool called Fastbridge. With this tool, teachers give short screeners which help analyze specific student needs.
Once a screener is given, the results are analyzed by a team of educators including the classroom teachers, special education teachers, reading interventionists, administrators, and in this instance, trainers. We are developing steps that help catch "holes" in the skills students need to be fluent in both reading and math. Once a student shows that they have a skill need, they are placed on a list to receive a diagnostic assessment. By conducting a diagnostic, we can better develop the skills students need. Students are then sorted by need into groups led by the professionals listed above.
Each student attends a session for both reading and math daily. We're calling this time of the day W.I.N. Time. It stands for What I Need. We recognize that every student has unique needs and we're doing our best to accommodate them.

Teacher of the Month:
It is with great pleasure that Hiawatha Elementary School can celebrate Mrs. Scheutz. Mrs. Scheutz, one of our Kindergarten teachers, is the recipient of our first Teacher of the Month award. We can all agree that Mrs. Scheutz is well-deserving of the honor. She is enjoying her new wheels for the month provided by Hiawatha Ford. The SUV was even in her favorite color!

Community Service Day
Some high school students will be volunteering on October 2nd. Our building has a list of things on the to-do list. A couple of larger projects they will complete will be repainting the dinosaurs and basketball goals on the playground, tending some of our flower beds and trimming some trees.
We do have plans to remove two of the small trees in front as they've taken some abuse from the rain and hail. Several of the lilac trees will remain as they are donations honoring Mr. Schmitz.
It's a nice circle that the trees were planted by students in high school when they were fourth-graders, and they can help remove them. I think it is a dignified way to honor their initial work and to find closure on the landscape project. A few teams are working on some updates to the design there as well.
