Welcome to the Dakota County 4-H Friday Forecast
Meet Kris Vatter; new 4-H Educator
Kris Vatter stepped into the role of Extension educator, 4-H Youth Development in Dakota County on Monday, Sept. 19. Kris is transitioning to Dakota after nearly three years supporting Carver County's educator role. Kris brings experience and expertise in program growth, event management, volunteer development, and DEI advancement, and she is excited to strengthen Dakota County 4-H offerings.
Meet Kris!
I’m a mom to two teens and two cats and I’ve been working as the Carver County Extension Educator for 4-H since September of 2019. I recently chaperoned the Minnesota Delegation on the 2022 Citizenship Washington Focus trip.
I’ve been a volunteer for Dakota County 4-H for over eight years and was a very involved Wisconsin 4-H'er in my youth. If there was a 4-H thing to do, I was ready to do it!
Prior to becoming an Extension Educator, I worked in Higher Education for 28 years in various Student Life roles like orientation, student government, event planning, and facility management.
My family of two teens, two cats, one guinea pig, and I live in Northfield. I’m excited to join the staff of Dakota County and make great things happen! Connect with me at kvatter@umn.edu.
(That’s me with the hat on, touring with CWF delegates, this summer)

Middle and high school students encouraged to join the local ambassadors; information meeting Sept. 26
The Dakota County 4-H ambassador program is open to youth in grades 6-13, who enjoy volunteering and working with younger members. The ambassador program is a great way to share your leadership skills while helping your community. The 4-H ambassador program allows youth to take part in activities to help them become leaders and good citizens. A 4-H ambassador is a self-motivated, enthusiastic leader who promotes the organization using the skills, knowledge, and leadership abilities acquired in 4-H. They serve to strengthen the 4-H program through public relations and serve as a positive role model for younger members. Some past activities include: participating in community service projects, planning and leading Cloverbud activities, and promoting 4-H at various events throughout Dakota County.
An informational meeting will be held on Monday, Sept. 26 from 6 to 6:30 p.m. at the Dakota County Extension and Conservation Center in Farmington. To RSVP for the meeting, sign-up here. Any questions, contact Rachel at reza0027@umn.edu.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15-Oct. 15
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated in the United States from September 15 through October 15 each year. This is a great opportunity to learn about the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic Americans.
Why does the celebration start on the 15th of September?
Most of the cultural celebrations on our calendar begin on the first day of a month and run to the end of that month. But Hispanic Heritage Month always starts on September 15. And that’s because that particular date has great historical significance.
There are five Latin American countries that gained their independence on that day:
Costa Rica
El Salvador
Guatemala
Honduras
Nicaragua
In addition, Mexico celebrates their independence on September 16. And Chile’s Independence Day is September 18. Later, Belize was added to the list when it declared independence from Great Britain on September 21, 1981.
