Greetings, James Burd Families,

Welcome to November everyone! I hope everyone is enjoying watching the leaves change and the beautiful colors that are present. I enjoy driving to school and watching the sun rise over the colorful hills and mountains around us.

Earlier this evening, you received a phone call requesting that you take time to update your information used to inform you about school delays and closings. If you need assistance in updating that information, please contact the main office to speak to Mrs. Diehl or Mrs. Pinckney (717-530-2780 ext. 3910).

Please check out the reminder below for the district-wide Title 1 Night coming up on Monday, November 14 from 6:00-7:30pm. The deadline to register for this FREE event is November 7.

Last school year, we transitioned to trimesters at the elementary level. The first trimester will end before our Thanksgiving Break. Report cards will be issued on December 6. We will hold conferences on December 1, 7, or 8.

The Shippensburg University students have put together a program for students K-5 that contain useful information, resources, and games to help your child.

The Student Assistance Program (SAP) is a process for identifying students who are experiencing behavior and/or academic difficulties which pose a barrier to their learning and success in schools. SAP offers supports to those students and their families. The core of the SAP team is group of faculty members who have received specialized training from the state of Pennsylvania. One of the most important tasks of the team is to build a partnership with families, focusing on the student's success as their common goal. Participation in this process is voluntary and is completely confidential.

Recently, we have completed our benchmark testing in all grades. All grade levels are meeting to review the information we learned from these assessments and begin to prepare for our WIN time. WIN stands for What I Need. There will be a time later this month where your child will be switching classes for a 30-minute block to work on a skill that would be important for them to review or practice. During this time, we will spend three days on math concepts and three days on reading concepts. We are using this time period to make a direct effort to help students get support in key areas to help them improve.

The School Board approved updates to our volunteer policy. All of this information is located in our school website. To summarize, volunteers must complete an application that will place them into one of two categories:

• Position Volunteer: This volunteer would be directly responsible for the welfare of our students. Examples of this type of position would include chaperones and tutors. If a parent is applying for this type of volunteer, they must have clearances, TB test, etc prior to being approved by the School Board. It is imperative that you begin the process of this application as soon as possible to ensure that you are on a School Board agenda prior to the event that you wish to participate in.
• Guest Volunteer: This volunteer would be working directly under the supervision and direction of a member of the school staff. An example of this type of volunteer could include parent volunteers. If a parent is applying for this type of volunteer, they do not need clearances or TB test, but they would need approval from the building principal or designee.

James Burd Elementary utilizes School Dismissal Manager as a method for parents to update their plans for their child's dismissal. By 2:15, we would ask that any changes/updates be completed. We utilize this service to know what you want your child to do at dismissal. Please take time to download the app and establish your default preferences. If you need help, call Mrs. Diehl or Mrs. Pinckney in the office for assistance.
