This bulletin continues last week’s theme of student engagement.
This 50-minute seminar begins by identifying teachers’ common concerns about the modern learner and the characteristics of the motivated learner and goes on to address these through the use of the five R’s model for student motivation, engagement and inspiration. The practical strategies are supported by examples from experience, literature references and a supplementary file of supporting resources (note, page numbers referred to in the talk are out of sync by two pages towards the end).
“Identify the teaching methods that work best for modern learners, including several strategies to better engage and motivate your Millennial students. You'll learn the five new R’s: Research, rationale, relaxed, rapport, and research-based methods. Delve in-depth into each “R” and why each one is critical to helping your modern students succeed.”
Quote:
“… greatest challenge is not assisting students in achieving outcomes, it’s getting them to WANT TO.”
The 5 R’s:
- Redesign for long-term gains, development of competencies. Begin with the promise of the subject and create positive expectancy from the first day.
- Research-based pedagogies of engagement.
- Relaxed learning-centred environments.
- Respond with consistent consequences.
- Rationale for procedures and policies.
- Rapport building with students.
Presentation handouts, full transcripts and supplementary resources are available for download if you don't have time to listen to the seminar.
