A Note From Principal Jeff Brandt
We hope that everyone enjoyed a relaxing, joyous holiday season. The new year brings with it a busy time for schools. The first semester is drawing to a close and the second semester will be beginning soon. Winter activities are in full swing. The registration process will also be underway soon. While this is an extremely busy time of year, I want to remind everyone to take deep breaths, slow down, and enjoy the process!
Happy New Year! We hope all of you have a great 2023!
Jeff Brandt, Principal

Building Conditions
With the extreme winter weather conditions that our area has encountered over the last month or so and also because we are dealing with an aging heating and plumbing system at Dickinson High School, our custodial staff experienced a challenging end to 2022. We are extremely fortunate to have a committed, hard-working custodial team at DHS.
With an aging heating and plumbing system there are going to be situations that arise. Three such situations came up right before Christmas break and during the break. Pipes broke in various vestibules at DHS leading to flooded entry ways. The Vocational Building (Yellow Building) also experienced heating issues over the holiday break.
We are hopeful that the extreme temperatures and weather conditions that we experienced before and during Christmas break will not persist after the new year. However, there are ramifications that an aging heating and plumbing system can have on student learning:
- The possibility of teachers having to utilize rotating classrooms
- Extreme temperature variations between classrooms and areas of the building
- Possibility of areas of DHS being temporarily closed or shutdown
There is no doubt regardless of the issues that we face, everyone at Dickinson High School will continue to provide a safe, positive, productive, and fun learning environment for our students.
Exemplary Attendance Incentive
Students that qualify for the exemplary grade/attendance policy are not required to attend class during the set exemplary attendance dates/periods. (Last two days of the semester.) Exemplary grade/attendance is on a block-by-block basis. Students that do NOT qualify for exemplary grade/attendance are required to attend classes in which they do not qualify for during the last two days of the semester.
- Any student with an A in class will earn the exemption.
- In order to earn the exemption if the student has a B in the class, the student would have to have 4 or fewer tardies AND 4 or fewer counted absences.
- Students with a C or below will NOT qualify for the exemption.
- Any student having ISS, OSS, or an unexcused absence will NOT qualify for the exemption in that particular block.
Virtual Learning Days
We have experienced 4 Virtual Learning during this school year already. These days give the school district the opportunity to hold classes virtually and avoid having to make-up school in the event of extreme weather conditions. We want to thank our families for their patience and understanding during our virtual learning days.
Our staff works hard to provide productive, engaging learning activities during the virtual learning days. We know there is no substitute for in-person learning. However, in order to continue to utilize virtual learning days instead of having to make-up storm days, we need to continue to have students participate and complete the learning objectives during those days.
We saw increased participation in the Virtual Learning days in December vs. the day in November. Hopefully we do not have to have any more Virtual Learning days. However, in the event that we do, please encourage your students to participate and complete the requirements on those days.
