Preschool: Taste Test Activity
by Mrs. Angelica
As we are currently studying Plants in Hawaii in our classroom, Kumu Ku'uipo created a fun taste testing activity for us in Hawaiian Studies Class! Students had to conduct a "blind" taste test of different foods that come from plants found here in Hawaii by wearing blindfolds! Students had to try and guess what type of food they were eating based on taste and touch! Students had to guess if the food was Kalo (Taro), Mai'a (Banana), Ko (Sugarcane), 'Uala (Sweet Potato), or 'Ulu (Breadfruit)! Students loved this activity very much, and all of them were really good at guessing! We ended the lesson by singing and dancing to a fun song that talks about all of these special foods! Mahalo Kumu Ku'uipo for this fun activity!
Kindergarten: Na Mea Kupono
by Ms. Harding
The kindergarteners had a great learning experience at Na Mea Kupono. They learned the parts of the Kalo plant and helped to till the Lo'i by walking through it. Kumu taught them that if they take care of the Lo'i, It will take care of them. They ended their day with a song about pounding kalo and got to taste paʻiʻai!
Third Grade: Na Mea Kupono
by Mr. Baker
Students were able to visit the Na Mea Kupono for a second time in their third grade year. They got to learn about the significance of the Lo'i right in the neighborhood of Hale'iwa and Waialua and the meanings of the names of our mountains, rivers, oceans, and towns. We were lucky enough to plant some trees on the Lo'i grounds, with students saying some chants and taking part in an event that aims to help us learn that planting trees and taking care of the land can extend to our own homes and lives, especially knowing that we live in Hawai'i and it's a privilege to take care of everything around us here.
Fifth Grade: Waimea Valley Field Trip
Written by fifth graders: Jocelyn Riggins, Sage Langford, and Wai Passos
The fifth graders visited Waimea Valley where they learned about Oahu’s ecosystem. We also learned about invasive flora and fauna. We examined the native fish on the stream. We even went on a scavenger hunt for an indigenous bird of Oahu! We learned about the Ahupua' as well. Lastly, We also went on a long walk to the large amazing Waterfall! In summary, Waimea Valley is an awesome place to experience the beauty of Hawaiian nature.
Sixth Grade: We Made Tea and Mango Salsa
The 6th graders have been learning the nutritional value of the foods that we eat. In our ‘aina lessons students use the ‘Aina Food Guide to identify the nutritional value of foods as protective, energy, brain, body-building and caution foods. Close to the source foods have the most nutritional value. The students have been making food from the plants that we’ve grown as well as plants they’ve grown at their homes. Some of these items are herbal teas and mango salsa! It’s fun sampling new recipes and sharing.
