It's Google Time
PLCS...Google Great
What’s all this talk about Google?
PLCS will slowly be transitioning to the Google platform away from Office 365. For some this news is super exciting and way overdue. For others, this news is scary and creates lots of questions. Over the next 10 weeks you will be receiving this weekly “Friday Google Facts”. The goal of this publication is to answer your questions and fully explain the transition plan to Google. We want to give every staff member the tools they need to help make this transition as smooth as possible.
As part of the google transition, all OneDrive and OneNote files will eventually be moved to Google Drive.
Do I have to move the files?
No. Migration services and support will be provided by the District. Please do not create your own personal accounts and start moving files on your own.
Will OneDrive files be lost in the google transition?
No. Files currently saved on OneDrive will be moved to Google Drive eventually, but not yet.
How long will OneNote and One Drive be accessible?
Files and notebooks will be accessible by staff throughout the transition. Processes to support moving content will be put in place. The goal will be to provide layers of support and guidance to ensure a successful transition for everyone.
Can I do anything to get ready for my files to be moved?
You can start organizing your files and folders in OneDrive, if you want.
You can find best practices for naming files here.
Staff Questions & Answers
The following questions were submitted by PLCS Staff. If your question wasn’t answered this week, it will get answered in the next newsletter.
Q: When we switch over to Gmail, will we get a new email address? Or will the @paplv.org still work?
A: Yes. The transition will include a new email address format (first.last@plcschools.org) and your old address will still function, messages sent to it will be forwarded automatically.
Q: Will we retain the local, as opposed to online, suite of Microsoft programs such as PowerPoint?
A: At this time there is no plan to discontinue the deployment of the Microsoft Office Suite, however, we will evaluate and consider if there is still a district-wide need after the 2021 school year.
Q: Currently, we all have 5 free licenses to download Microsoft Office through PLCS on personal machines. With the transition to Google, will these licenses go away? If so, when will that happen?
A: No. Currently, the Microsoft contract will continue through the transition to Google through at least the next school year. The home license will change after the transition depending on future cost analysis and licensing structure.

Testimonial
I am so excited that PLCS is transitioning to the Google Education Suite because its products allow students to easily communicate, collaborate, and get creative! My favorite Google tool is Google Classroom because it creates an amazing space for teachers to build classroom community as well as keep students organized with an integrated calendar, discussion board, assignments, and announcements all in one space.
