Going Green
By Brian Cole
Tending to the greenhouse is a daily task for the students in my Sustainable Living class. Watering plants, keeping photo records, and documenting the growth progress of seedlings are only a few of the many assignments students are responsible for in the greenhouse.
They are also conducting experiments in the greenhouse, like hydroponics versus soil. They have germinated the same varieties of leafy greens in both hydroponics and soil to see if one performs better than the other. These results and the results of other experiments will help to guide the direction and future plans of the greenhouse.
In the garden, a student designed and built a sled that deposits a top dressing of soil on our garden rows to prepare for planting later this month. Many of our plants have been started in the greenhouse and will be transplanted into the garden after the threat of frost has passed.
Essay Winners
We would like to recognize Allie Marler, Chloe Walker, Jordan Smothers, Michael Mealor, Nicole Volk, Blakeney Sewell, and Anna Gray. These students participated in the Daughters of the American Revolution Essay Contest and their essays were chosen to represent George Walton Academy at the Chapter level.
Exploring Our Nation's Capital
GWA seventh graders have been busy learning about Washington D.C., becoming experts on its history, landmarks, monuments, and museums. They are honing their research and report writing skills while preparing to visit our nation’s capital.
Spread the Word!
Foam Forms
Upper school sculpture students are creating animals- including a squirrel, cow, beluga whale, panda, and a lion, from foam insulation. They use knives, saws, and wire brushes to shape, carve and detail their sculptures. Once complete, they will coat with a thin layer of concrete and display their sculptures in the GWA garden. We can't wait to see the finished works!
Pi Pong
Members of GWA’s Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society) sponsored the Pi Pong Invitational during upper school LINX period on Wednesday. With Mac Geoffroy on the microphone and Mr. Terrell, Mr. Reynolds and six students competing, the tournament was competitive until the end. Finalists sophomore Logan Blalock and Mr. Terrell battled in a close match with Logan claiming victory. He won the opportunity to “pie” someone and earned his class a dress-code free day on Pi Day, Monday, March 14.
