What's happening with Student Leadership at NGC
Student leadership took part in a team building exercise where they learned about the importance of communication. The students were introduced to the human zipper through a non-verbal video. From there, they were instructed to replicate the human zipper. There was lot of laughter and fun. They learned you have to listen with both your ears and your eyes to really hear communication. They also learned that when no one listens to each other, confusion occurs. In addition, they learned how important it is to give full attention to a message to be sure you understand what is being communicated. Fun learning!
The student leadership class spoke to the student body about suicide prevention and what students can do to help keep their friends safe including the warning signs of suicidal thinking, how to get help, information regarding depression and the suicide hotline number. Group picture of the students participating in the presentation is below.
Healthy Reminders
Health Reminders
Proper hygiene is important to remain healthy. Always remember to:
1. Carefully wash hands before and after changing diapers, using the toilet, eating, preparing food, and handling animals.
2. Ensure that small children are washing hands after using the toilet.
3. Regularly disinfect surfaces like doorknobs, countertops, and other high-touch items.
Children and staff with vomiting, fever, or diarrhea should not attend school, childcare, or public activities until 24 hours after symptoms resolve without medication.
Let’s wash those hands and stay well!
Recordatorios de salud
La higiene es importante para mantenerse saludable. Siempre recuerde:
Counseling Corner: How a Healthy Diet Helps in the Classroom
Today, there are 12.5 million children ages 2-19 who are considered obese. A poor diet can lead to serious health issues such as heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and certain types of cancer. There are many additional benefits to eating a healthy diet including a reduced risk of kidney stones and bone loss, improved mood, better sleep, clearer skin, increased ability to think and remember and support for stronger muscles and bones.
A healthy diet consists of four servings of fruit and vegetables each day, reduced sugar consumption, some starchy foods such as rice, pasta or bread, at least 2 portions of fish each week, less salt and lots of water to keep hydrated.
The best reasons to begin eating healthy are as follows:
- Good foods such as fruits and vegetables contribute to feeling calmer, happier and having more energy.
- Good foods boost your immune system aiding your body in fighting off illness which saves money spent at the doctor’s office and reduces absenteeism where students fall behind on class work and lose instruction.
- Good nutrition supports the body’s skeletal frame preventing osteoporosis and fractures later in life as well as supporting the body’s growth and healing processes.
- Fish improves cognition or our thinking processes and improves memory.
- Complex carbohydrates such as beans, oatmeal, barley, quinoa, potatoes, and wheat can boost endurance and build muscle. Adequate protein intake and blueberries, believe it or not, build and repair skeletal muscle.
- Tryptophan can help students feel calmer. Tryptophan is found in dark chocolate, oats, dried fruit, seeds, eggs, fish and dairy.
- Avoiding sugary foods helps reduce outbreaks of acne.
- A healthy diet Improves sleep. Foods rich in magnesium help us fall asleep faster and decrease incidents of waking up at night. Fermented dairy products like yogurt and kefir help us have a better quality of sleep and increase our ability to sleep longer.
- Avoiding ongoing caffeine intake can reduce stress and fatigue.
- A protein rich breakfast helps reduce cravings for junk food later in the day, and it helps to increase levels of dopamine in the brain which helps us feel better.
