February 2023 Issue 1
Message from Head of School, Matt McCrea
Dear Families,
Welcome to February, and greetings for Black History Month! We take this month to recognize not just the accomplishments, achievements, and contributions of African-Americans, but also to remember that Black history is American history. One story cannot be told without the other.
We also want to congratulate all of our 8th grade students for completing their high school applications on February 1! They've been working hard to learn about the many excellent high school options in the city and completing the application process, and we look forward to seeing the results of the matching process.
Have a great week!

Online School Store
Meridian’s online School Store is now LIVE! This new digital ordering system makes purchasing uniforms and apparel a breeze for students and staff. Check out the store at bit.ly/MPCSstore. Adult and Youth sizes are available! The online store will close Sunday, February 26th, and will reopen during peak purchasing times throughout the school year. See examples of what can be purchased below. There will still be a limited number of items for purchase at the front desk of both campuses.
Celebrating Black History Month at Meridian
Over the next few weeks, we will be highlighting how our young scholars at Meridian are celebrating, learning about, and honoring the amazing work black leaders have done & continue to do. Our students will be researching and studying various key figures, time periods, and movements that are foundational to Black history. Through these learning experiences, students will come to OWN these topics and serve as educators to their peers.
Ordering School Portraits
We are happy to share that all pre-paid school photos have been received and distributed to students by their teachers. If you pre-paid for school photos and did NOT receive them, please email support@freedphoto.com for assistance.
All families interested in ordering their students' school photos may visit www.freedpics.com and use the code MPCS2223 to view and purchase your students' pictures. If you have additional questions about school photos, please reach out to the Family Engagement team. Pamela Anderson (Middle School) can be reached at panderson@meridian-dc.org and Hilda Marquez (Elementary School) can be reached at hmarquez@meridian-dc.org.

Students in Action
Dean Williams' School Store at the Middle School
Our Middle School students have been working hard to gain points at Dean Williams' school store. Points can be rewarded for instances such as good behavior, an excellent grade, or an act of kindness! Once a week, Dean Williams welcomes students to "pay" for prizes with their points. We hope this project continues to grow and inspire our middle schoolers to do good and be rewarded for their achievements. Keep up the good work MS students!

Mental Health Tip: Arts and You
You likely have a few tunes that you know lighten your spirits. Now’s the time to crank them up. Putting your headphones in and pressing play on your favorite Spotify playlist can help decrease mental health symptoms, like anxiety and depression. The mix of melody, harmony, and rhythm stimulates the senses and promotes calmness by slowing down breath, heart, rate, and other bodily functions. Tip: put on your favorite tunes this week!
