Delran High School Broadcast
September 4, 2020
DELRAN HIGH SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT
Delran High School, an inclusive learning community, provides educational opportunities for intellectual development while valuing the importance of cultural diversity and tradition.
A Message from Mr. Finkle!
Welcome to the unprecedented 2020-2021 school year! On behalf of the administration, faculty, and staff, we would like to officially welcome the Class of 2024 and their families to our DHS family! I will be sending a bi-weekly Broadcast on Thursday via email. In order to receive these Broadcasts, please make sure that your emails are updated in the Parent Portal. It is very important and imperative that we have your correct email and personal information. If and when we receive updated information from Governor Murphy, the district will be communicating these updates or changes via email.
I need to communicate more specifics about the opening of school!
First and foremost, some student courses may have changed periods or rooms due to room capacity needs. Students should check the Portal before coming to school for the first time. We will provide each student with a schedule on the first day of school. Please understand that every decision we have made places the staff and students' health as the primary variable.
Every person's temperature will be taken upon entry to DHS. If the temperature reading is above 100.4 degrees, that person will be isolated and sent home with a parent.
PPE is mandatory within the four walls of Delran High School. Masks must be worn that cover both the nose and mouth of every individual. Failure to do so will result in a referral to the administration.
IF YOUR CHILD IS ILL, PLEASE HAVE THEM STAY HOME! Any student who presents with COVID-19 symptoms will be isolated and will need to be picked up immediately. HERE is the letter that parents will receive if your child needs to be picked up.
Arrival to School:
- BUS: All students who ride a bus will be transported to DHS where his/her temperature will be taken and enter through the Bus Lane doors. Breakfast will be available in the cafeteria for these students.
- Drop-Off: All students who are driven to school will enter through the main entrance where his/her temperature will be taken. If the student arrives before 7:15, the student will be directed to the Auxiliary Gym where breakfast will be available.
- Students who Drive to School: All students who drive to school(before 7:15) will enter the building through the Gym Hallway where his/her temperature will be checked. He/She will then be directed to the Auxiliary Gym where breakfast will be available.
At 7:15, all students will be dismissed and will go directly to his/her first-period classroom. Loitering in the hallways or any congregation of students within the hallways will be discouraged.
Classroom Procedures: All classroom windows and doors will be open to promote air-flow. Upon entering each classroom, all students must use the sanitizing spray and towels provided to clean the desk, chair, and computer if one is in to be used. Students can then use the hand sanitizing station within the classroom to clean his/her hands.
Cafeteria and Study Hall Procedures: All study halls and all meals will take place in the Cafeteria, Gymnasium, and Auxiliary Gym. All desks have been placed at least 6 feet apart from one another to promote social distancing. Students are not allowed to move the desks for any reason. We also have the opportunity for students to be outside during these times. We have picnic tables and a tent where students can be. They may remove their masks at this time; however, they must remain at least 6 feet from any other student or staff member.
Day 1: Wednesday, September 9th: This will be a SINGLE SESSION DAY for ALL STUDENTS VIRTUALLY. HERE is the schedule that the students will have to follow.
Also, it is imperative that all students know how to sign-in to their Canvas Account BEFORE the first day of classes. Canvas is our new Student Management Learning System. In order to do this, all students will need their District Username and Password. This is the SAME username and password from last year. If your child has forgotten his/her credentials, I processed letters that give each student their name and password. In the Parent Portal under the Correspondence tab on the left-hand side, you will see under General Letters, a letter named Student PW. The information is contained in that letter. If you cannot access that information, please communicate with the main office on Tuesday and we will help you out! HERE is a video that explains Canvas.
Please take the time to watch the video to understand Canvas and what it has to offer your child. You will find the login site on the newly designed DHS Homepage!
Day 2: Thursday, September 10th: This will be our first in-person DELAWARE Day! This day is also a SINGLE SESSION DAY. HERE is the schedule that the students will have to follow.
Day 3: Friday, September 11th: This will be our first in-person Rancocas Day! This day is also a SINGLE SESSION DAY. HERE is the schedule that the students will have to follow.
Day 4: Monday, September 14th: This will be a FULL DAY - DELAWARE. HERE is the schedule for Full Day instruction. All DELAWARE students are expected to be either in their classroom or in their Google Meet on-time for each and every class. RANCOCAS students are to be signed in to Canvas where an assignment will be given and is to be completed during the school day. The expectation is that students are "in school" 5-days a week. Teachers may also assign homework that would be due the following day.
Day 5: Tuesday, September 15th: This will be a FULL DAY - RANCOCAS. HERE is the schedule for Full Day instruction. All RANCOCAS students are expected to be either in their classroom or in their Google Meet on-time for each and every class. DELAWARE students are to be signed in to Canvas where an assignment will be given and is to be completed during the school day. The expectation is that students are "in school" 5-days a week. Teachers may also assign homework that would be due the following day.
Day 6: Wednesday, September 16th: This will be our first Check-in Day! HERE is the schedule for the day. EVERY student, both DELAWARE and RANCOCAS must follow the schedule and be on-time for each class. Attendance will be taken. We do not want any student to lose credit for any class due to absences.
Delaware and Rancocas Schedule
To avoid any confusion about which days are Delaware and which are Rancocas, HERE is a nifty calendar which delineates the days for the entire school year should we still be in this situation. Please be sure to reference this, especially during weeks where we do not have 5 school days!
Physical Education
All students, whether hybrid or remote, will have Physical Education and Health as required by the State of New Jersey. All students will participate in PE in the 1st and 4th Marking Periods and have Health either 2nd or 3rd. Since locker rooms are not allowed to be used, all students who will be in-person should dress appropriately each and every day. Comfortable clothing and sneakers should be worn for the activities that they have planned.
Transportation
For those who are provided transportation to school, please sign-in to the Parent Portal and click on the Transportation tab on the left-hand side for pick-up time and location. Any questions should be directed to Sandy Jankowski in the transportation office at sjankowski@delranschools.org.
Expectations for Remote Learning
HERE are the district norms for students who will be signing in for instruction including Wednesdays. If you have any questions, please direct them to me.
Materials Pick-Up for REMOTE Students:
Since the remote students will not be in the building to be issued books and materials, we have instituted a process by which you will be able to pick-up all that your child will need. We will have drive-thru service on Friday, September 11th between the hours of 12:30 and 3:30. We plan on having these days every 4-5 weeks to ensure that every student has access to the materials that they need! If you are unable to attend during the pick-up times given, please contact Maureen Flanagan at mflanagan@delranschools.org who will arrange a different time for pick-up.
Calculators
Delran High School requires all students to have a working graphing calculator for math class. The Math Department recommends a TI-83 or TI-84. HERE is a link to borrow a calculator. Please know that they will be disseminated first on a financial need basis. Thank you!
Back-to-School Night
This year, Back-to-School Night will be Virtual! I will send out a letter to the entire community with a welcome as well as a link to each teacher's welcome message. Stay tuned...

Naviance
All students 10th -12th have an account.
Naviance is a web-based tool that allows your student to explore their values, personality, strengths and correlate them to career clusters. It directs them to colleges with suggested majors so that they can build a list of colleges to explore.
Seniors and Juniors can see upcoming college visitations and request to attend directly in Naviance.
All students should be building their personal activity resume.
Ask your student to share with you what they are doing in Naviance.
College Planning
Is your senior ready to send out college applications this fall? Click here to review what to do this summer to prepare for college admissions.
Students at all grade levels are encouraged to begin exploring colleges. Build colleges of interest in Naviance and plan campus visitations.
