The typical rehabilitation period for Tommy John surgery is 12 to 18 months. The 2024 season has virtually become unplayable. Returning to the 2025 season is a realistic goal.
Alcantara pitched in 146 games over seven seasons in the major leagues, recording 41 wins, 55 losses, and an ERA of 3.32.
He earned a Cy Young Award in 2022 after pitching 228 2/3 innings in 32 games, going 14-9 with a 2.28 ERA.
In the 2023 season, he pitched 184 2/3 innings in 28 games, going 7-12 with a 4.14 earned run average.
On September 4th, in an away game against the Washington Nationals, he pitched 8 innings, allowing 9 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks, striking out 3, and allowing 4 runs (2 earned) before leaving due to injury.
As his team, Miami, was competing to advance to the postseason, he attempted to return, and even made a rehabilitation appearance in Triple A on September 22, but the pain returned and he eventually gave up on the season.
In the end, he learned that surgery was the best option.
“I gave everything to baseball, I gave everything to this city,” he said. He promises that he will work tirelessly, not even for a single day, to come back better than before. Although I cannot play, I will be with the team as much as possible. “Nothing can take away my love for Miami and Marlins fans.”
Miami is scheduled to enter the 2024 season with starting resources such as Jesus Luzado, Braxton Garrett, Edward Cabrera, Yuri Perez, Trevor Rogers, Max Meyer, and Ryan Weathers.
