A Weekly Newsletter from School Leadership
Food For Thought and A "TO DO!"
"In education, student engagement refers to the degree of attention, curiosity, interest, optimism, and passion that students show when they are learning or being taught, which extends to the level of motivation they have to learn and progress in their education. Generally speaking, the concept of “student engagement” is predicated on the belief that learning improves when students are inquisitive, interested, or inspired, and that learning tends to suffer when students are bored, dispassionate, disaffected, or otherwise “disengaged.” Stronger student engagement or improved student engagement are common instructional objectives expressed by educators." as defined by The Glossary of Education Reform by Great Schools Partnership Link to article: https://www.edglossary.org/student-engagement/
My newsletters in September have focused on engagement: moving a school from good to great means moving from ritually compliant children to those engaged in the LEARNING.
As a whole when the leadership team reports out on "noticings" in our weekly leadership team meeting, this has been a theme. Engaged classrooms have been a celebration rather than the norm. Therefore part of our Early Release PD this week will be a "SPEED DATING" format of sharing great hands-on engagement strategies.
- ALL teachers (core content, ESE, resource/electives) will be responsible for bringing an activity that they use in their classroom that is not a worksheet. It is something that has engaged students. This is not an assignment to go make something, but to grab something Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before 1pm that you are using, have used or plan on using.
You will be explaining your tool or engagement strategy with a peer, then they will share theirs... we will rotate a few times so that you can learn from each other! You will also process how might I use that strategy in my classroom or content area. It doesn't matter if you are K, health, biology, or ESE small group... everyone has something to contribute!
Think Kagan Strategies, Hands on Centers, Interactive Notebooks...
P.S. - Teammates don't let teammates come empty handed - make sure you remind your pals!

Comparisons
Comparisons to Duval is Duval average - that means their high performing and low performing areas all averaged. Note we are not beating our Duval schools in Learning Gains for Math Overall, Science Overall and Middle School Acceleration. We have to be able to offer better & different to our families.

URGENT FOR REVIEW
A door was propped Friday at the back entrance, probably by an employee going to pull car tags, but then the door was not staffed and a parent walked in, and through the building without being stopped. Luckily, they came to the front desk for what they needed, but what if this had been a parent with a custody issue, a parent angry with a staff member, or a vagrant looking for a bathroom, a sexual predator...
Lock down/Code Red drill will be this week for September. Please review your process.
Please reflect on last week's fire drill which was not as strong as our August ones... what could have been done differently?
Childhood Cancer Awareness
From Mr. Belay:
Friday 27th we are having a school wide fundraiser for childhood cancer awareness month. The foundation we have partnered with is The Kate Amato Foundation.

Kate Amato Foundation | Lighting the Fight Against Childhood Cancer
Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children. For those who survive, the side effects of treatment can cause severe long-term health problems.

Students and teachers are encouraged to wear yellow/gold that day for a dollar. All money raised will be donated to the foundation. They are a local nonprofit foundation out of Jacksonville beach.
