Be your best.
Do your best.
Grow even better.
As the first academic quarter ends for WMS students on Wednesday, October 26th, this is a natural opportunity to have a discussion about your students academic performance and other feelings about school. Here are some tips and tricks to guide this discussion.
Due to the first academic quarter ending, all student work from the first academic quarter needs to be completed and turned into their teachers no later than Friday, October 28th.
Remember our Academic Support Center offers an opportunity for ALL students to receive support on any assignments, missing work, reteaching, etc. Our Academic Support Center is open Monday-Thursday 7:30am-bell and Monday-Thursday 3:45-4:45. All students are welcome. Students do not need to call ahead or make a reservation. Come on in!
With the start of a new quarter, some of your student's classes may change and some will stay the same. Please take the time to ask your student(s) about his/her new class(es) and teachers.
WMS Parent/Guardian and Teacher Conferences
Upon arrival, please stop by the Main Office for a map and information for you to take home. Staff members will be located in their classrooms. Conferences will be held privately in the classroom. If the door is closed or there is someone in addition the staff member in the room, it indicates there is a meeting occurring. Please wait in the hallway, and you'll be next! Our staff works very hard to be considerate of others waiting their turn.
Individual conferences with teachers are not at a schedule time. Come and join us anytime between 2:00-8:00. you can choose the order of the staff members you'd like to speak with.
We appreciate your efforts to attend. We know families are very busy. We look forward to seeing you and your student(s)!

Favorite food: Fettuccine Alfredo.
Favorite colors: Purple and black
Favorite Book: I love books and reading. Cozy mysteries are my favorite. I don't know that I could name just one as a favorite as there are too many to choose from.
Favorite Place: Home and near water Home with my family and pets! I'm married and have three kids, ages 15,12, and 5. I also have 2 dogs and 2 cats. I could sit and watch the river (or ocean waves) forever. There is just something peaceful about it.
Favorite Hobby: Photography. Nature and action shots are my favorites to photograph.
Favorite Thing about WMS: The staff. Everyone has been wonderful and it just feels like a big family here.
Favorite Thing about Middle Schoolers: I love how involved with the school, so many of the middle schoolers are.
Favorite Thing about Pre-School: I love seeing the preschoolers smiling faces. And when they learn something new, it's exciting and puts a smile on my face.
There is so much joy in seeing the kids, whether the middle schoolers or the preschoolers when something clicks in their heads and you know they've got it!

Washington Middle School celebrates Red Ribbon Week from October 24 to October 27th. The TIP members visited homerooms to talk to the kids about what RRW is and why we celebrate it. RRW was launched by DEA agent Kiki Camarena’s family and friends after he was kidnapped, brutally tortured, and killed by Mexican drug traffickers. The red ribbon symbolizes a commitment to a healthy drug-free lifestyle, no use of any illegal drug, and no illegal use of a legal drug.
The TIP members brainstormed, and voted on, dress-up days for the week to help us celebrate a healthy and drug-free lifestyle. The dress-up days are as follows:
Monday “Drugs will Trick You!” White Lies Day
Tuesday “Catch the Wave to a Vape and Tobacco Free Life!” Hawaiian Day
Wednesday “Make Drugs a Thing of the Past!” Retro Day
Thursday “Drugs Will Hurt You!” Injury Day
The TIP members also have a skit, rap, activity, and testimonial committees visiting the Lincoln 4th grade classes on Thursday, October 27th to help encourage their choice of being alcohol, tobacco, and drug-free.
This is a great time to discuss with your children about making good choices when faced with the pressure of using alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs. When kids think ahead on how they would respond, given a pressure situation, they are better able to make good decisions for themselves. Asking them about “what if” scenarios and having them practice a response is a great way to prepare them and allow them to practice standing up to negative peer pressure. The following are some simple suggestions on how kids can say no.
Simply say no, and walk away.
Give a reason: “no, I’m in sports.” “My parents would ground me for life.”
Offer an alternative: “no thanks, do you want to go bowling instead?”
Avoid places, or leave, where people are using these substances.
Hang with friends who support your choices. It’s easier to say no when you have friends to back you up.
Did You Know?
...Middle School Students may Lose Items?
If there is something that you or your student has been wondering about, please remind your student to check out the items in the LOST and Found. Parents/guardians are welcome to check the tables in the cafeteria on conference night as well.
After conferences on November 3rd, all items left will be donated to the Attic.
From the Desk of Mr. Swanson
When the weather grows cool, I think of quiet times around the fire. Cool weather and grey skies can bring some people’s mood down. Do things that give you joy in your life. Look out for the welfare of others. Check up on friends and family. Reach out to those around you and share some joy. A smile, wave, or kind comment can go a long way. If you feel motivated to do something, random acts of kindness can improve the outlook of even the stoutest heart.
Along with the mood concerns related to the change in the weather, there is a risk to physical well-being as well. Remember to dress for the weather. Wear clothes that keep you warm. Layer up to brave the chilly weather. Wear shoes that grip and keep out the weather. Walk safely being aware of your surroundings and the possibility of slippery surfaces. No horseplay. With slicker surfaces, the chances of injury during horseplay increase dramatically.
I want to encourage each and every one of you to balance out the cold outside with the warmth inside you. Share joy and love with those around you. Kindness is the best gift that you can give and is absolutely free.
