Health Update: Energy Drinks
Update from the OMS Clinic & Mrs. Gallan (Director of Health Services)
We have noticed that a number of students are coming to school with energy drinks, consuming them at school in the morning or at lunch, and wanted to share some information from the nurses regarding the dangers that these drinks pose.
Many of these drinks contain excessive amounts of caffeine, some upwards of 400mg per serving which is the equivalent of 4 coffees or 8 servings of soda. There are also a number of other ingredients that can be potentially harmful in large doses including herbal supplements, amino acids, and vitamins. Caffeine overdose is a concern with consuming 500mg of caffeine or more. Symptoms can include fast heart rate, high blood pressure, headaches, muscle tremors, increased urination, insomnia, and irritability. In the most severe cases, teenagers have suffered an irregular heartbeat that led to cardiac arrest and death.
Please take a look at the caffeine content of the drinks that your child is consuming and speak with your child about the dangers of consuming caffeine. Beginning January 3rd, drinks containing caffeine will not be allowed in school. We appreciate your partnership in keeping the students at OMS healthy and making good choice about what they are consuming.

Lost & Found
We have many coats and missing student belongings in our Lost and Found. If your child is missing something, please have them look in the Lost and Found which is located in our Cafetorium. All items in our Lost and Found will be donated over the break. Parents/guardians, you are welcome to come in after school to help your student look in our Lost and Found for any lost items.

Thank you for your support and generosity!
Morning Arrival Reminders
For morning drop-off, we ask that you pull your car all the way to the second crosswalk (towards the parking lot exit). The morning entrance for students is at the second crosswalk (see below picture for student entrance). As the roads get icy in the winter, please drive carefully and be patient. Mr. Williams is in the parking lot at the first crosswalk helping direct traffic. Make sure to pull your car up past him all the way to the second crosswalk when dropping off your student. This allows for more cars to move into the OMS lot to drop off.
SPS Event Pass for Winter Events
The SPS Event Pass is required for OMS students who want to attend an event unaccompanied by an adult for specified SPS events. It is the same pass that was used for the SHS football games. If students already have a SPS Event Pass, they can use it for the winter. If students need a pass, they will need to turn in a permission slip in order to receive one.
An SPS Event Pass is needed for the following events:
SHS Winter Chorus and Band Concert
- OMS Winter Choral Concert
- OMS Winter Band Concert
- SHS Basketball Gamest
(Please note: If your student is performing in the concert, they do not need an event pass. The event pass is for students who plan to attend the concert in the audience unaccompanied by an adult)
