St Bernard's Newsletter
Summer 2023
Headteacher's message
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the relaunch of the St Bernard’s High School newsletter filled with just a flavour of the achievements of our students. I continue to be immensely proud of our students who display resilience, tenacity and a general sense of all round good humour and kindness. As we come to the end of the academic year, I thank all of our families for your continued support. I wish you all a wonderful summer break and look forward to welcoming the students back in September along with our new intake in Year 7 and 12. Do keep us in your prayers as we keep you in ours.
Warmest regards
Mrs Moise-Dixon
A LOOK BACK AT OUR RECENT EVENTS
Sixth Form trip to University of Essex
Our Year 12 cohort was invited to the University of Essex, Colchester Campus to take part in a series of sessions to support their Post-18 Options. Students enjoyed informative sessions on subject taster sessions which challenged their critical thinking and reasoning skills. The event is an example of the career provision we provide for our students at St Bernard’s; meeting several Gatsby Benchmarks.
Golden Gala Ball Event
St Bernard’s hosted its first ‘Golden Gala Ball’ for Year 11 and 13 students this year. It was a fantastic evening and a highlight for parents, teachers and students. Due to the success of this evening, St Bernard’s will be having the ball as an annual event! Thank you to everyone who made this evening a huge success!
Trip to Jimmy's Farm & Wildlife Park
Y9 Food & Nutrition visited Jimmy's Farm & Wildlife Park in Ipswich. They were able to take part in a ranger-led workshop to learn about and explore sustainable farming methods, different types of reared animals, meat production and the organic growth of fruit & vegetables.
Inspiration talk with GB athlete Emma Nwofor
Emma Nwofor, a British hurdler, paid a visit to the school and delivered an inspiring speech to students from various year groups. During her talk, she provided valuable advice regarding hurdling techniques.

CULTURE WEEK
St Bernard’s fostered a vibrant celebration of diverse cultures, allowing students to explore a variety of dance styles including flamenco and Hip Hop, and many students were able to try African drumming.
Yoga was also experienced by some Year 10 students, and to bring the week to a close the school had a fashion show which not only showed cultural dress but also dance, music and singing - a fantastic way to see the talents of our students!
CELEBRATING ACHIEVEMENTS
Two outstanding wins for St Bernard's at Brentwood Catholic Schools Citizenship Awards 2023
Bishop Alan presented Natasha in Year 13 and Susi in Year 10 with their Catholic Citizenship Award at Brentwood Cathedral. Both students were nominated for this award by their peers.
Four Swimming medals for Emma
Well done to Emma in year 8 for winning four medals in three days at the Swim England Diving National Age Group.

Shout Out
Thank you to Aimee, Angel, Ellissa , Ana and Edith for helping out at Catholic Sports Day yesterday. St Teresa's said the girls were a credit to the school, and the primary school children had a great time!
THANK YOU
At the end of this academic year, we say goodbye to four foundation governors as they come to the end of their term of office. All have completed 12 years since St Bernard's became an academy but all have served prior to that point; all giving at least 20 years' service! During this time two of the four have been Chair of Governors setting the strategic direction of the school.
We have been incredibly lucky to have such dedicated governors who have always given of their time and energy to support the school and uphold its main aim - to provide an excellent holistic Catholic education in line with the mission of the Church. They have been great supporters and ambassadors of the school and we will miss them. We were pleased to present them with a token of our thanks for all of their hard work and unwavering support. Whilst they will no longer on the governing body of the school, we look forward to seeing them at events in the school as they remain part of the St Bernard's family.
