Math News
Looking for ways to support your mathematician at home? Look no further! Bridges in Mathematics offers various digital tools directly aligned to our curriculum which can support learning outside of the school day.
Math At Home is a free website filled with fun daily math activities, family activities, and online games. Activities are organized by grade and mathematical content. For each activity, there is an option to have the equation read aloud to your child as well as a printable option if you’d prefer.
The Math Learning Center offers free apps that are based on the visual models used in Bridges in Mathematics. All apps can be used on a computer or an iOS device. You can click ‘learn more’ about the app before your mathematician engages with it. This explains what the model is and allows you to watch a tutorial of how to use the app. There are also activities that directly align to the visual models that can be used for additional practice. The activities can be sorted by grade, topic and app.
What's Cooking In The Kitchen
Harvest of the Month
Our Harvest of the month is apples and all our apples at Memorial are local. Beckett Farms in Glastonbury is our main apple supplier, there is just nothing better than a farm fresh apple picked ripe from the tree!
Lunch They’ll Love to Munch:
Did you know that your kiddos have a multitude of vegetables and fruit they can choose from each day? We’ve been serving some delicious watermelon that the kids have been loving. We also have fresh side salads every day, cucumbers, carrots, corn, broccoli, and cauliflower spears for dipping – all sorts of crisp raw veggies that students can choose to take along with their meal. Studies show that students who eat school lunch eat more fruits and veggies at home than kids who pack lunch!
In the Garden:
This week our garden club harvested our potatoes, and it was SOOOOO fun! We tipped over the bags they were growing in and dug through the dirt to find them. There were so many in each bag – we were all surprised! And the purple ones are absolutely beautiful. We can’t wait to try them next week in the cafeteria!
Library News
Hi Cheetah families!
It has been a busy month in the Memorial School library! Students have been practicing their library skills each week and are becoming more independent library users.
See below for grade level classroom expectations.
PreK students are enjoying a variety of read alouds and songs with the themes of fall, apples, and pumpkins. We have also practiced some sorts, reinforcing colors, the same and different, and practiced counting together.
Kindergarten is working on discussing the role of the author and the illustrator. We have read This is My Book and have done several sorts and songs to aid in this discussion.
First grade is learning about the elements of a story (characters, setting, problem/solution) and practicing making predictions when we are reading and then revising those predictions as we read. Over the past few weeks we have read The Library Dragon by Carmen Agra Deedy, Give Me Back My Book by Ethan Long, and Nannette’s Baguette by Mo Willems.
Second grade has begun their unit on digital citizenship. They are learning about the types of information that is safe to put online versus what is unsafe. We will learn that we should never share our username/passwords, birthday, school, or address. They have also been introduced to Typing Club which is a keyboarding program they will be using up until 5th grade. In addition second graders have begun listening to the chapter book Big Foot and Little Foot by Ellen Potter.
Third grade has also begun their unit on digital citizenship. They are reviewing the types of information that is safe to put online versus what is unsafe. They are also discussing how we can be responsible digital citizens in terms of taking care of ourselves, our friends and family, and our community. In addition, we have reviewed how to use Typing Club and are reading Melonhead by Katy Kelly.

Safe School Climate
The East Hampton Board of Education and the school community as a whole promote a secure and productive school climate, conducive to teaching and learning that is free from threat, harassment, and any type of bullying behavior. Therefore it shall be the policy of the Board that bullying and/or teen dating violence committed against a student by another student is prohibited. The Board believes that a school environment in which students feel safe, supported, engaged and helpfully challenged is optimal for learning and healthy development. The Board seeks an environment in which students and adults feel socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically safe; an environment that is free of harassment, intimidation, teen dating violence and bullying. Our website provides links to various policies and reporting forms including our Safe School Climate Plan. Hard copies are also available in our main office. If at any point you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to building administration for further assistance.
Attendance Matters
Please note
When considering the number of absences your student has accrued, keep in mind that a student must be present for 195 minutes in order for the day to count! When bringing your student in late, or signing them out early if they have not been in school for a 195 minutes the day will be recorded as an absence.
