A Note From Ms. Flaugher
Greetings Hilltoppers.
As I write this I am looking at the second snowfall of the month. The snow provides an opportunity to slow down and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. The time to relax is definitely appreciated because things have started to pick up here on campus.
January 19th was the start of second semester and we welcomed additional students back to campus. We are also deep into our winter sports season, with regional competition beginning soon. The fall sports season also begins in February. Many of our other programs and clubs continue to safely provide ways for our students to participate in activities. I continue to be so proud of our coaches, sponsors, and students for making these opportunities happen. Whether it is competing virtually or in-person it takes all of us working together to make it happen.
PSATs were administered on January 26th to over 100 students. The task of organizing this event in a normal year is difficult. This year posed even more challenges but it went off without a hitch thanks to our amazing counseling department. Thank you to them and our volunteers who helped proctor our tests.
Our teachers are working hard to serve our hybrid and remote students. I continue to urge students to utilize all the supports we have available, including participating in Zoom sessions with teachers. At any time students and families can schedule conferences with teachers for additional help.
In closing, I want to express my continued gratitude for your support. As I say to the students each morning in my announcements, it takes all of us to make this work. Wishing you and your family continued good health.
Sincerely,
Rose Flaugher, Principal
Principal Appreciation Week
January 24-29 was Principal Appreciation Week. This is Ms. Flaugher's first year in the captain's seat as the principal of E.C. Glass. She has successively managed the ins and outs of instructional leadership during a pandemic, but we think there couldn't have been a better person to lead the Hilltoppers through this unprecedented time.
We would like to thank all of our principals for their patience and wisdom. For inspiring with their kindness and endless positivity. Thank you for your continued love and dedication to the ECG students, faculty and staff. Your hard work and leadership are truly appreciated. E.C. Glass is a better because of you.

ATTENTION CRIMINAL JUSTICE 1 & 2 STUDENTS/GUARDIANS: Crime Scene Investigations Kit Distribution
Criminal Justice 1 & 2 students will begin their block on Crime Scene Investigations this quarter! To provide students with all of the equipment and materials they will need to complete assignments remotely, individual crime scene kits have been assembled. Students/Guardians can pick up a kit outside of the main lobby at E.C. Glass during one of the two following time slots:
Tuesday, February 9th between 1:45-2:30
Thursday, February 11th between 9:15-10:00
Please complete the following Google Form to indicate when you will arrive to pick up a kit: Criminal Justice CSI Kit Distribution
The CJ Instructor ENCOURAGES family members to participate in the Crime Scene Investigations assignments! Have fun with it as a family! CJ2 students may need help creating their own mock crime scene at home.
Here are a few helpful FAQs:
1. What if my student is a hybrid student?
They will receive their kit in class and can take it home. They do not need to bring it back each week.
2. Do we need to return the kits?
No. Most of the contents will be used up by the end of the CSI block; however, any remaining items are yours to practice with, courtesy of LCS!
3. When should the kits be opened?
It is HIGHLY recommended that students wait until the instructor advises students to open their kits. Students will receive a notification on Google Classroom. If items are lost or damaged prior to an assignment, there are no replacement kits. Assignments will be rolled out over a period of 6 weeks, so please do not "get ahead" of using the contents.
4. What do the kits contain?
Kits contain various items for documenting, collecting, packaging, and labeling physical evidence. A list will be available on Google Classroom. Students should be VERY careful with the latent fingerprint powder, as it is VERY messy, and they should avoid opening the vile of distilled water until the assignments regarding DNA collection are released. Finally, all blood evidence is synthetic but should be handled as if it is real...like a legit CSI would do! Gloves are included in the kit, and they are sized according to a Google Form students completed during Q3W2 in Google Classroom.
5. Will students need to provide any of their own materials for assignments?
Yes. Students will need access to a camera (phone camera is just fine) to take photographs of their evidence. Students will also be asked to create a few pieces of physical evidence using common household items.
If you have remaining questions for Criminal Justice Instructor Kelly Glenn, please submit them using the above mentioned Google Form: Criminal Justice CSI Kit Distribution There is a section for questions and comments at the bottom.

Counseling Updates
Grade level google classrooms: Students are strongly encouraged to sign up for their grade level google classrooms. A lot of great information is posted in these classrooms.
Seniors & Mid-Year Transcript Requests: Beginning with the 2016-2017 school year, Lynchburg City Schools transitioned from primarily semester-based to yearlong classes with the exception of dual enrollment courses and a few elective courses. As of 2017, our division made the decision to only update transcripts on a yearly basis for all secondary students. Our school can send a student’s report card to schools for mid-year review. However, if you request a transcript, it will only reflect the end of a student’s junior year that was sent with the student’s initial application. Please reach out to your school counselor if you have questions.
Sophomores: Deadlines are quickly approaching for the Central Virginia Governor's School program (February 12, 2021) and
Early College Program (February 15, 2021) and. You can view this website for more information including how to apply to the different programs, https://www.lcsedu.net/schools/ecg/counseling/early-college-cvgs-stem-academy. Please give your teachers and counselors enough time to complete your recommendations, at least two weeks is highly recommended.
Snack Chats: The ECG School Counseling Department will be hosting Snack Chats for students who may have questions about the Early College Program, STEM Academy, and Central Virginia Governor's School. Please see the google form below for the sessions you are interested in Snack Chat sign up.
Virginia Tech Talent Search: Virginia Tech's Talent Search is here to be a resource to help you discover your future goals and current passions. The program is geared to help you succeed in also enrolling in college and setting the stage for you being successful. The application deadline is February 15.
Ms. White would love to chat with you more if you have any questions about the application process. Set up an appointment with her at www.calendly.com/mswhiteecg to learn more.

Attendance
Regular Attendance
Regular attendance helps our students excel in learning.
Lynchburg City Schools is checking student attendance on a daily basis. We need all of our students, whether they are remote learners or in-person (hybrid) learners, to be involved with school every day.
Parents, guardians, and families, you are essential partners in promoting good school attendance even in this most challenging time. When a student misses one day or one lesson, that means they may have missed something critical to their understanding of the next several days of instruction.
High schools will be checking attendance each day using a daily attendance question. Beginning Monday, November 2, hybrid AND remote-only students will be required to log into their Homeroom Google Classroom each day by 3:00 p.m. and respond to the Daily Attendance Question.
If students do not complete the daily attendance check-in as outlined above, beginning the week of November 2, 2020, families will receive an automated phone call letting them know that their student was marked absent on the previous day. If the student or family believes the recorded absence is in error, please reach out to the school. ! #AttendanceMatters #Hilltoppers #Dare2Lead #TogetherWeKeepClimbing

Remote Learning Tips
Are you and your student struggling with how to structure the remote learning school day? Having trouble navigating Google Classroom? Need some ways to manage your stress?
Luckily, a team of Hilltopper teachers put together a resource to help give students ideas on ways to be successful: setting up a schedule, navigating Google Classroom, stress management, brain breaks, what a virtual learning day could look like, and more! These were created in the hope that one or more of these resources will help you become even more successful this school year (and beyond)! Here is a short, one page resource for students as well as a more detailed set of slides for families.

Nurse News
Nurse News
Schools continue to utilize Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations on Reopening Guidance for Cleaning and Disinfecting Public Spaces, to reduce viral transmission and keep our children and school personnel healthy and safe. Staff and students can assist this effort by promoting healthy behaviors and following these practices: If you have been exposed to someone with Covid-19, having Covid Symptoms or have had a Covid-19 test, please notify the school nurse at 434-515-5374 or woodjw@lcsedu.net. In addition, some practices we can all follow to help stop the spread of Covid-19 are:
Stay home from school or work if sick, even if symptoms are mild.
Wear an appropriate face covering.
Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue (or sleeve), and then throw the tissue in the trash. Immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol.
Avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
Clean and disinfect surfaces that are often touched.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Take care of your health overall. Stay current on your vaccinations, including the flu vaccine, eat well, and exercise to help your body stay resilient.
The Virginia Department of Health provides information about COVID-19 and frequently asked questions (FAQ) from parents and concerned family members. The CDC offers tips to keep staff and children healthy during this time.

Thank You!
A Special Thank You
The old saying is true, once a Hilltoppers, always a Hilltopper. That was on display in January when two of our retirees returned to lend a hand. Karyn Barra, who retired this past spring came back second semester to serve as a long term substitute. Jim Ackley,, who retired in 2012 after 32 years of service at E.C. Glass High School answered the call when we needed assistance with PSAT administration. We cannot thank you both enough for your help!
