Edgewood's Tiger Talk
September 23rd, 2022
We are committed to our journey of developing EACH child to be an inspired learner and a caring, contributing citizen.
Principal's Update
First, I want to give a shout out to all of our families for following our arrival and dismissal procedures. It's been the smoothest start yet, and it's because of you! This helps us to have smooth, safe processes.
Thank you to those of you who filled out the Parent Survey. We had a record number of responses! Aliyah in 3rd grade will be Principal for the morning on October 7th. If you see her at arrival, make sure to greet her with a, "Good Morning, Ms. Graham!"
One of the questions/concerns that a couple parents voiced was school safety. In today's world, it's sad, but true, that many wonder how safe their children are at school. I thought I'd take a minute to outline our plans, procedures, and policies related to school safety.
(1) RELATIONSHIPS AND CONNECTEDNESS: Our district partners closely with the police department. In our meetings, they say again and again that the most important thing to do is to build strong relationships with students and families. This is proactive and preventative. At Edgewood, we prioritize relationships as part of our work to maintain our status as a National School of Character. We greet each student multiple times in the morning, devote class time to morning meetings, and work to know each student on an individual level. Our Edgewood Alumni often keep in touch with staff; the relationships we build matter.
(2) PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT: Every month we have a drill. We practice evacuation drills (aka fire drills), lockdowns, and tornado drills.
(3) BUILDING SECURITY: With the exception of arrival and dismissal, all doors are locked and closed. Parents are not allowed into the building at arrival and dismissal. This practice both makes it very easy to identify anyone who shouldn't be there AND ensures that teachers and staff can pay attention to the emotional state of every child starting the school day.
Safety is a pre-requiste for learning, and we take it seriously. Thank you for your ongoing support with it.
