Principal's Corner
Hope everyone is getting some rest and enjoying the break.
We have three weeks until the end of this semester. Students will take their final exams the week of December 11, 2023. It is very important to stay focused and complete work on time. We need everyone in class daily to ensure academic success. Additionally, we need to improve our daily attendance rate. This is critical to student achievement. Our goal is 95% daily attendance rate. Currently, we are at 91%. Please help us get back on target. School starts at 8:30am each day. We need all students to arrive by 8:20 at the latest so that they can be in class on time.
Senior Make-up Picture Day is November 27, 2023. Thank you!
If you need to send in absence excuses, please email lee.attendance@hsv-k12.org.
Have a great weekend!!!
Sincerely,
Kitrise Torain
LHS Principal

Attendance
Attention FamiLEE! One of our 2023-24 goals is to keep our overall attendance rate at 95% or higher for the entire school year. We are currently at 93.12% for the year, and last week we were at 90.55%, which is far below our goal. We need your help to improve and reach our goal! Attendance is one of the most important factors that influences how students do in school, and we need each student with us at school every day!!!

Shout-Outs
Shout-out to our freshmen of the week from last week! Giselle Gambles comes to us from ASFL Middle. Here at Lee she is in the visual arts magnet and in the creative writing club. In her spare time she likes to write, read, cook, play video games, and draw. When she graduates from high school she wants to go to college but is unsure of a career path. Her favorite teacher at Lee is Ms. Bacik because she is smart and likes history and Coach B because of her personality. Adrian Loyd comes to us from Chapman Middle. Here at Lee he is interested in running track. In his free time he likes to sleep, play basketball, and do word searches. His favorite teacher here at Lee is Mr. Jordan because he likes the way that he explains math and makes it easy to understand. Congratulations to both of them for representing our FamiLEE values so well!
- Shout-out to our band! They were able to serve the residence of Todd Towers Thanksgiving Meals and deliver water over break!
- Shout-out to the Lee students participating in the 2023 Beautillion Ball presented by the Fun-Set Social and Charity Club! They represented our school extremely well.
- Shout-out to our Cheerleaders! They traveled to Birmingham last week to compete and did well enough to receive a bid to the state competition! Congratulations ladies!!!
- Shout-out to the 2023-2024 Lee High School Tennis Team!!! Their names are listed below.
FamiLEE Teacher Spotlight
Congratulations to our faculty spotlights this week. We are celebrating Ms. Hunkapillar and Ms. Radowski. Here is what students had to say about them:
Nikki Hunkapillar
She dances her heart out and pours her talent into us. She doesn't just teach us dances, she dances with us.
She really cares about her students and takes time to make us shine.
She has been teaching dance for so long and she acts likes she still loves it so much.
Tiffany Radowski
She teaches me how to draw and without her my art skill level wouldn't have went up
She is very respectful and she cares about her students.
She loves her job and works hard every day to make sure the students in her class learn about art and the history of it and how .to level up there art skill level.
Genuinely the nicest teacher I have. She treats me and all her students fairly and with respect.

Technical Director of Theatre- Ms. Campolongo
Tech: Hello!! Thank you all who have helped with the dance concert. This past week, our first and second years learned about theatre hierarchy, production process, and backstage etiquette. Our third- and fourth-years worked on concept projects and learning how to do design presentations. Before we go on our break, there are a few things to note.
● Applications: Applications for tech positions on productions have been posted onto Schoology. Students who were not able to hand in a hard copy can still scan a copy to me over the break. Scheduled interviews will occur the week we come back from the break.
● Trumbauer: We leave for Trumbauer on Nov 30th after school. Please make sure that your students who are attending bring their suitcase to school. It will be stored in Ms. Rock's room during the school day. We start to drive back on Dec 2nd after the awards ceremony. Students who are competing will have their IE schedule released soon.
● Upcoming After school work hours: We will have after school work calls on Nov 28th, Nov 29th, Dec 4th, Dec 7th, 3:40 - 6:30 pm
● Hours: All hours are due by Dec 9th. They must input everything into the Hours' Logbook in the classroom. Individual projects for hours and community hours will also be due. Community hours need to be signed by a supervisor from the organization where the student worked. Students who are planning on working events that occur after this cut off will proactively put it into the log book.
Dance Magnet Director- Mrs. Hunkapillar
- Shout-out to all the dancers on an amazing fall performance last week!
Visual Arts Magnet Directors- Mrs. Johnson and Ms. Radowski
- Vis Art I- Finished Britto Paintings and Lino Blocks. Monday will start self portraits in the style of Tim Burton. We will go over cartooning as an art form. The importance of shape to create those pieces and how to characterize oneself.
- Vis Art II - Finished Britto Sculptures. Monday will start mixed media projects done in a surrealist manner with a nightmare and/or other world theme. We will discuss surrealism, nightmares/dreams, other worlds and how to capture those ideas and put them on canvas. We will reference famous surrealist artists.
- AP studio art: Congrats to Mrs. Johnson and family on their new addition!
Photography Magnet Director- Mr. Willmarth
- Magnet I students are learning how to talk about Art and Photography through Art History lessons looking at photographs from established photographers. Also exploring how to use juxtaposition in their photography either through content creation with careful framing of images or by additive drawn elements layered onto darkroom prints.
- Magnet II students have been creating layered color prints using the historical process Gum Bichromate, with several successful duotone images, and are now creating CMYK negatives and layering them using Photoshop to create the negatives and being able to register the images properly on top of each other. Students are mixing their own emulsions to create their own photography papers, and are allowing time for experimentation and unexpected results throughout the multi-day process.
- Magnet III students are creating images using Juxtaposition and soon will be using portrait lighting techniques as we get closer to Christmas, making use of new background stands in the photography studio.
- Magnet IV students are working on using Romantic imagery in their work to include in their digital portfolio, Behance.
Film and Video Director- Mr. Lee
- We have also been working closely with our Dance Magnet Ensemble to document the work done with their guest artist from Giordano Dance Co from Chicago, IL. On top of filming classroom rehearsals and workshops using multiple cameras and GOPros, select Magnet students will assist with digital media integration in DME Presents Ignite the Fire as well as providing edited video for our Spring Dance showcase in 2024. Collaboration with all magnets continues to be a unique highlight for our Film and Video Program.
