First Grade Field Trip

The first graders are taking a field trip to Rocky Point Creamery in Tuscarora, Maryland. Our trip will take place on Thursday, May 25th. We will learn about how they raise their animals and make their products, which ties in to what we are learning in social studies-- goods and services.


The payment and form is due by May 19th. You can pay by check, cash or ONLINE. We highly encourage ONLINE payments.


Students will need to bring a packed lunch from home on this day. We are looking forward to a great time!

Our Month Ahead

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

At the beginning of May we will finish up Unit 7 - Past, Present and Future

The essential question that we will be focusing on for the unit is - Why is the past important?

We will read informational texts, compare and contrast and write an informational piece.


By mid May, we will begin Unit 8 - Observing the Sky. The essential question that we will be focusing on for the unit is - Why do the sun and moon capture our imagination?

We will listen and retell key details, write key details and describe connections between events.


Please have your child practice the skills that we have already learned:

- short and long vowels

- double consonants (ff, ll, ss)

- digraphs (sh, ch, th, qu, ck)

- trigraphs (tch, dge)

- consonant blends (bl, tr, st, nd, scr, mpt)

- 2-syllable words

- r-controlled vowels

- vowel flexibility (schwa sounds)

- long A vowel teams (ai, ay)

- long E vowel teams (ea, ee)

- long I vowel teams (y, igh)

- long o vowel teams (oa, ow)



MATH

We will continue Module 6. Students will count and write and understand place value to 120. We will add 2 digit numbers using a variety of strategies.



SOCIAL STUDIES

In social studies, we will learn about economics. We will focus on different types of markets in the community and describe how goods and services are acquired. We will learn about natural, human and capital resources.

First Grade Teachers Had Fun Over Spring Break!

Mrs. Brewbaker

I had a busy spring break! I did a lot of spring cleaning and organizing around my house. The highlight of my spring break was taking the boys to Butler's Orchard. While there, we were able to see animals, ride on slides, take a hayride, play on the mini diggers, and bounce on bouncy pillows. We also celebrated Easter with an Easter egg hunt and dinner with our family. I hope your spring break was as fun as mine!

Mrs. Ledford

My family, friends, and I had an amazing trip to Key West, Fl. We rented a boat and went snorkeling, found beach islands, and had lunch at a drive up boat restaurant. We also enjoyed going to the sea turtle hospital, where we learned how to protect the sea turtles and we got to see them up close and feed them. Of course we had to try their famous key lime pies and all the delicious seafood. We had a very memorable spring break!

Mrs. Henderson

I had a great spring break with family! We went shopping, played games, spent some time outside and dyed Easter eggs. On Easter, we went to church, had an Easter egg hunt and spent the day celebrating with family! It was nice to relax and spend quality time with family.

Mrs. Blackwood

Over spring break, we took a trip to our family home in Florida. We had beach time and spent time with our son and daughter-in-law. Our son is stationed in Jacksonville and is in the Navy. We ate ice cream and enjoyed our time together.

Ms. Tan

My spring break was very relaxing. I was grateful for the warm, sunny weather and time with loved ones. Jared, Stella, Luna, and I went to a secluded cabin in Virginia. We enjoyed sitting by the fire and making smores every night. We also went hiking in Shenandoah National Park to see South River Falls.
