Redford Roll Call
Redford Township Police Newsletter - August 2016 Edition
Chatting with the Chief
Welcome to the Redford Roll Call, our new community newsletter! I am excited to be able to offer another way to keep in touch with the residents we serve.
So why the name "Redford Roll Call" you ask? Each day at the beginning of their shift when officers report for duty, a roll call is held. Roll call is where information about what has happened since the officer's last shift, new suspects, special patrol needs, and community events is shared. This is also the time where officers bond with each other, making their partnerships on the streets even stronger. As part of the Redford Township Community, I consider each of you part of my officers' shift and team. The Redford Roll Call is a monthly newsletter that will share a variety of information from crime tips to meeting dates to special recognition of people and activities.
Welcome to the team!

Meet Ken Mercer who uses his tractor, which he has named "The Beast," to keep the alley behind his home and vacant businesses clean and cut. Ken told us that he just wants to keep Redford looking nice for residents and businesses.
Ken is a great example of someone who goes the extra mile for his community! Thanks Ken!

Introducing Your Redford Officers!
Officer Jeff Bero
Meet Officer Jeff Bero, a 20 year veteran with the Redford Township Police Department, who also has 6 years prior law enforcement experience with the Ecorse Police Department. Jeff is currently one of our Field Training Officers (FTOs) who works with our new officers to teach them Redford Township ordinances, policies, and our computer system. As a member of our Perimeter Rifle Team, Jeff is prepared to respond to any situation. In his years here at RTPD, Jeff has served as the Crime Prevention Officer, coordinator for the Neighborhood Watch, Police Explorers, and DARE program, as well as being a past member of the SWAT team as a sniper.
Jeff understands what it's like to be the victim of a crime. Unfortunately, Jeff was the victim of a stalker who broke into his home on August 7th, 1998. Jeff came home, interrupting the stalker, and a fight ensued where Jeff was shot 1 time in the chest and his personal dog was killed. The stalker was apprehended, charged, and convicted of Assault with Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm, Home Invasion 1, Felony Killing of an Animal, and Felony Firearm, receiving a 39 - 52 year prison sentence. Jeff is a fighter and he returned to full duty after just 3 weeks of recovery.
Outside of the uniform, Jeff was Captain of his football team at Wayne State University before moving on to play semi-professional football with the Downriver Raiders and winning the National Championships with a 17-0 record in 1996. Jeff has been married for 20 years and serves as the Manager for his son's hockey team.

Safety Tips
It's beautiful outside isn't it? Nice weather invites more pedestrians and makes it easier to walk the streets. That also makes it easier for some shady people to try and steal items from you cars. Why? In nice weather people tend to leave windows open. Then there is always those that leave their cars unlocked. Criminals are very opportunistic and will walk down the streets pulling on car doors to see who didn't take that extra second to push the "Lock" button. These bad guys will happily relieve you of your belongings. Don't make the criminals happy! Keep valuables out of view. LOCK YOUR CAR DOORS!
If you see someone that appears to be looking into cars or trying to open doors, immediately contact Redford Police at 911! If you discover that someone has been in your car and taken items, call our Non-Emergency line at 313-387-2551 or come into the station to make a report.
