CATCHING THEM IN THE ACT
A CONSERVATORY PREP NEWS LETTER
WEEK OF NOVEMBER 30 -DEC 4, 2015
Rehearsals have begun! We appreciate the students being on time (even in the torrential downpours this week) and the efforts made. Students are busy writing scripts, memorizing lines, staging, painting scenery, editing and relieving stress by playing a game of basketball.
On Tuesday, December 6th we will be walking across the street with the students to have lunch at Tijuana Flats. Please bring money. Parents must give their permission by clicking RSVP at the bottom of this newlsetter.

HAPPENINGS OF THIS WEEK
Middle School Math
Middle School math continues to manipulate musical fractions. Students are exploring changing the time signature for a piece of music and therefore having to calculate the equivalent fractions. Here Ian and Jennifer practice clapping out the beat of music.
Middle School Science
Students are excited to start gardening! This week they planted an Ayurvedic herb garden. The students have been studying plant parts. Now they will see plants develop first-hand. They will use their garden to create their very own Ayurvedic medicines.
Middle School Ancient Civilizations
The students are explaining the roles of science in the ancient civilizations they've studied. For example, they noted the difference in approach between ancient Indian Ayurvedic medicine, which is holistic, and the traditions in the Nearer East, which focus treatment on discrete parts of the body.
Middle School Genius Hour
Our students are busy making props and scenery for the Odyssey of the Mind Competition.
Middle School English
The students admire the props they've worked very hard to create for our academic review. Nikko's arm is tired. Nikko? Nikko?
MIDDLE SCHOOL ART
Shadows are ubiquitous, but often go unnoticed. Shadows are important historically, for they provided early evidence that light travels in straight lines. Humans constantly, but unconsciously, use shadows to judge the shape of objects in their environment. Because shadows reveal much about an object’s extension in space, they are often used to heighten the illusion of depth in a painting. Here, Kai is adding shadow and highlights to the geometric shapes used for the Castle to help it look more realistic.
High School Latin
Diana and Rebecca pose in character, as we rehearse a comedy by the Roman playwright Plautus.
Geometry
Students are working hard calculating interior and exterior angles of quadrilaterals and are moving into exploring the properties of the trapezoid, rhombus, and kite.
Physics
The physics students are finishing up their lab on trajectory. Here students are using a still image, taken from a videotaped trial of a catapult projectile toss, to measure the angle of trajectory. This information is plugged into a formula to determine the launch velocity. Next stop, precision and accuracy.
English 1
Alice approves of Jonathan's attempt at the first few steps of a medieval Italian saltarello dance we're working on.
Latin 1
The authors/actors are editing the script and memorizing the lines to their original play in Latin.
European History
The students presented their time capsule projects and are now working on posters that will advertise the benefits of becoming apprentices in their chosen guilds!
European Art
The European Art class designs and decorates the School's Coat of Arms for our Castle.

Pre Algebra
Kaitlyn and Alice have continued their review of using positive and negative integers in 1-step equations. They have been making great use of their very own number line and have begun to use calculators to check their own work. They are preparing to move into 2-step equations.
Geometry Art
Geometric shapes are starting to take shape and forming a Medieval Castle.
Math for College Readiness
Ryan demonstrates his strategy for finding the answer to the challenge problem presented.
Algebra II
Dani focuses her attention on solving a wind and plane speed problem using her choice of methods for solving systems of linear equations.
US History
The students read excerpts from Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" and created presentations reflecting the views on separation prevalent in their individual colonies. Our final debate about whether to vote in favor of the Declaration of Independence should be interesting.
Environmental/Biology
Students in Environmental Biology are completing their study of the Human Population Growth and they will begin to explore the affects of that growth on other species.
Happy Birthday, Ryan and Kyle!
Happy birthday, Nikko!
