The invention of matches
The Renaissance
Who invented the match?
There were many people who played a big part in the invention of the match. Many were thought to be the "1st". One of the first known people who had played a big role was thought to be Hennig Brandt. His work in 1669 showed that he found the element of phosphate. Robert Boyle in 1680 was another big help. He discovered that if a wooden stick that had been coated with sulfur on the top of it had struck it in between a folded piece of course paper that had been coated with phosphate it would burst into a flame. Robert Boyle was known as the first modern-day chemist, he created two different laws in his time.
Who was given credit for (originally) inventing it?
One of the people that are given credit for successful matches is John Walker. He was the one who created the first successful, non-dangerous, friction match, the more updated version of the match. The credit for the first match or the idea of the match should be given to Robert Boyle because he was the first to come up with the idea.
What was the purpose of the match? What did it look like?
The match became very important during the Renaissance because during that time they had to use candles for light and it took time to light the candles. Once the match had been invented it was very important. The match was very similar to what the matches look like in current time. Wooden sticks that had the top of them coated with sulfur. To light the match they would strike the sulfur end in between a folded piece, of course, phosphate covered paper and it would light a flame.
How has this changed?
The match hasn't changed much in looks over the years, but it has changed in ways such as safety. When the match first came out it had been very dangerous and would often time create a big flame that would detach itself from the end of the stick and drop onto the carpet or onto an item of clothing that the user was wearing. Over the course of many years, the match has changed and has become safer. The match in modern times is still used but has also formed into automatic lighters that make it easier and safer to light things.
