Message from the Commandant
Families,
Many of you may remember that we conducted a cadet survey in grades 3-12 in April of 2022. This survey was part of our strategic planning process which was made possible through a $125,000 grant from the Indiana Dept. of Education. We are in Year 2 of this process, and we would like to conduct another survey for progress monitoring to ensure that our cadets’ and families’ voices are being heard and acted upon as we work to continuously improve to best serve our cadets.
Survey Content. The survey gathers information on how cadets feel about their future, their ability to solve problems, their basic needs, and the academic program at our school. The outcome of the survey will give our staff a better sense of how our cadets collectively perceive levels of hope, self-efficacy, basic needs, resilience, and rigor on our campus.
You may request to examine the questionnaire by contacting Mrs. Lynda Whittaker at lwhittaker@goapa.org. Please specify your cadet’s grade level as there are different levels of the survey.
Important Notes:
- It is Voluntary. Participating cadets do not have to answer any question they do not want to and may exit the survey at any time. Cadets can also choose not to take the survey when it is administered, no questions asked.
- It is Anonymous. No names are recorded or attached to the survey forms or data. The results will be made available for analysis with strict confidentiality guidelines.
- Administration. The survey will be administered to grades 3-5 during the week of 11/7/2022. Cadets in grades 6-12 will take the survey on Monday, 11/14/2022. It will take about about 20 minutes and will be administered in your cadet’s homeroom class.
- Potential Risks. There are no known risks of mental, physical, or emotional harm to your cadet.
Further Information. Your cadet does not have to take the survey. If you do not want your cadet to complete the survey, we request that you either complete and sign the form on the second page in the PDF attached below or email Mrs. Lynda Whittaker at lwhittaker@goapa.org. Your cadet can also decline to take the survey when it is administered. If you have any questions about this survey, or about your rights, please contact your building principal.
We look forward to using this data to continue to grow to best serve your family!
Sincerely,
Commandant Barker

COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS
All APA cadets in grades 6-12, as per our charter policy, are required to complete twenty-four (24) volunteer hours of community service per year. We will celebrate community service successes at the end of year awards day. APA strongly believes in “giving back” to others and to our community. Check out the graphic below for some community service ideas!
We also have a newer program called the Jet Fuel program, where students, grades 6-12, can help maintain the community garden and put together food boxes for the local community. Cadets can earn up to 2 hours per week of community service through the Jet Fuel program. Please email Mattie Walsh at mwalsh@goapa.org for more information!
Cadets will record their hours using a community service form via Google Forms. Cadets can ask their homeroom teachers for the community service form. Cadets can also ask their homeroom teacher how many hours they have recorded. Cadets will fill out their own forms based on their service hours for the specific events/service hours they worked. It will later be approved by administration.
