February 28

CMITN485 / February 28, 2023
ATTENDANCE MATTERS!
Students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance.
When your scholar is absent, a parent or guardian must fill out the following link: https://forms.gle/9X5351eb268gP6mT8
A parent written or doctor’s note MUST be UPLOADED directly into the form. Parents or guardians who call or email to notify the school of an absence will still be asked to complete the form.
If you are experiencing technical difficulties with uploading the note, please contact Mrs. Fermin at the front desk via phone contact 240-767-4080 or cfermin@cmitacademy.org immediately to ensure timely submission of all notes and to avoid absence being considered UNEXCUSED.
Absence from school, including absence for any portion of the day, shall be considered lawful only (excused) for the following reasons: *Death in the immediate family (i.e., parent, guardian, brother, sister, grandparent) of extended family and close non-relative. *Illness of the student. The principal requires a physician’s certificate from the parent/guardian after three school days. *Court Summons *Observance of a religious holiday *Mental Health Day - Students may receive as an excused absence one (1) day of absence in each semester of each school year for a student’s mental health needs. A note from a physician to excuse a student’s absence for mental health needs is not required. Family vacations and/or visiting relatives out of state/country are NOT lawful reasons for absence. Attendance at non-CMIT educational activities MAY be excused upon pre-approval by the principal. Families should contact the front desk to obtain an excused absence request form. This form must be returned to the front office at least one week prior to the planned absence. Make Up Work: Late or make-up work will not be accepted unless the absence is an EXCUSED absence and a form has been completed within 3 DAYS upon your student’s return to instruction. Once the note is submitted online, it is the STUDENT’s RESPONSIBILITY to request makeup work from their teacher(s). The front desk will NOT notify teachers regarding make up work.
Please take note that every day the School Communication System (SCS) calls all households to inform parents regarding your child’s tardiness and attendance issues. For questions or concerns related to your student absences or tardiness, please check SchoolMAX to see what attendance or tardiness has been entered by the teacher. If there is a question or concern about a specific class, please contact that specific teacher. For all other concerns, please email cfermin@cmitacademy.org.
Tardiness Policy Students will be officially tardy to school if they are not in their prospective classrooms at 8:05 am. If your student arrives at school between 8:05 - 8:15 am, they will be accepted through the cafeteria doors. At that time they will be issued an E-Hall tardy pass to their first period class. The time and code of T will be reflected in SchoolMax. Students who are tardy after 8:15 am should enter through the main doors to sign in and receive a tardy pass to class. Sometimes there are highway closures, weather conditions and traffic delays that may cause many students to be tardy. At that time, it will be to the discretion of the school principal to excuse ALL tardiness within a reasonable time frame for that specific day. Please keep in mind that it is of great importance to us that your student arrives safely to school and we are aware of these incidents that do occur from time to time.
As defined in PGCPS AP 5113, a student is chronically absent if the student has been enrolled in a school for at least 10 days and is absent 10% or more of the school days while enrolled at that school. A student is habitually truant if the student has been enrolled in a school for 91 or more days in a school year and is unlawfully absent from school for a number of days or portion of days equal to or in excess of 20% of the school days within any marking period, semester, or year. There may be legal consequences when a student is habitually truant.

Rigorous Preparation for the Upcoming SAT Exam on March 1, 2023
The SAT is frightening for a lot of students. You've read many books over the years, and your vocabulary is excellent (estimable, sufficient, respectable, even praiseworthy! ). However, analyzing four lengthy passages and two shorter ones in only 65 minutes can seem impossible. Moreover, The SAT Math is also highly rigid. Many things could make students nervous, including the pressure of the clock, the silence in the room, their own or their parent's expectations, or the fear of being seen.
The College Board is in charge of developing and disseminating the SAT and managing the AP exams and the CSS profile. Although the SAT has been used for quite some time, almost all universities now accept its results. Even if you're applying to a school that doesn't require them, a high test score can help you stand out. It also aids in the development of an engaging story. You could not participate in many extracurricular activities due to family obligations, or your grades suffered due to a mental health crisis. The admissions committee members will be more convinced that you are qualified if you perform well on your standardized tests and write an insightful application essay.
CMIT is committed to helping our students gain favorable results.
On February 18, 2023, CMIT north High school sent 55 students to join the BootCamp in Columbia. Former CLF schools hosted the Bootcamp by administrators known to help students succeed with standardized testing. On February 21 to 25, CMIT served seventy-two students enabling them to receive noticeable scores, thanks to dedicated teachers such as Ms. Tammy O'Donnel, Ms. Jennifer Matson, Ms. Katie Houston, Ms. Esra Keskin, Mr. Thomas Destry, Dr. Clarke, and all teachers who contributed and pitched in sent materials contributing to the success of the students.
Colleges want to find students ready to succeed, regardless of where life took them in high school. CMIT has always played a vital role in student success.

Mental Health Club
According to the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC), mental health issues can hurt many aspects of a student's life, including their quality of life, academic accomplishment, physical health, satisfaction with their educational experience, and relationships with friends and family members. These concerns may also affect a student's future career, earning potential, and overall health.
In addition, mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, sleep difficulties, and stress can hurt a student's energy level, focus, reliability, mental capacity, and optimism, resulting in poor performance. According to research, depression is connected with inadequate grade point averages, and co-occurring depression and anxiety might amplify this relationship. Dropping out of school has also been linked to depression.
CMIT Student-led Mental Health Club is dedicated to addressing these issues.
CMIT Mental Health Club advocates for prevention and early intervention work and helps to empower those suffering. Early detection of mental health concerns leads to improved academic achievement and reduced disruptions at school.
Signs of mental health concerns:
- Withdrawing from others
- Having deficient energy
- Appearing disheveled
- Losing interest in hobbies and other activities
- Trouble concentrating
- Becoming easily irritated or angered
- Changing eating or sleeping patterns
- Crying a lot
If you or a fellow student are experiencing any of these concerns, please be encouraged to ask, guide and seek help from the club, counselor,
and school staff. There is help and support available to aid in this sensitive period. You are not alone; CMIT is here to help you thrive, don't quietly suffer. Let us grow together.

Graduation Update
Seniors and senior parents,
We had our first graduation meeting with the county last week and I received some great news; all students will receive SIX graduation tickets. We will have a walkthrough soon at Northwestern High School, and I will confirm that they have the necessary seats available. We are also in the process of planning some events for the seniors' last week of school, some of which we will need volunteers/donations. Once we get the events finalized, I will provide more information. I look forward to working with everyone to make this a memorable senior year!

Earth Optimism Event
On Friday, February 24, the Earth Optimism Club had the pleasure of meeting with the Director of the Environmental Protection Agency Chesapeake Bay Program! Students listened to Dr. Kandis Boyd explain the role of African Americans in the Chesapeake Bay. Dr. Boyd shared her heartwarming backstory and encouraged club members to continue striving for their goals, even if others doubt them. After Dr. Boyd finished encouraging our members, the floor was opened up to students who were able to ask questions. Finally, Earth Optimism Club members were able to showcase the projects they have been working on. They showed off their bird houses, compost bins, e-waste program, and storm drain awareness!
It was Earth Optimism’s pleasure to meet with Dr. Boyd, and all of the club's parterns which included representatives from the Chesapeake Bay Trust, Smithsonian Institute, World Wildlife Fund, Lewis Museum, PGCPS, and CLF!
Co-Sponsors Mrs. Cunning and Ms. Gonzalez are so proud of the Earth Optimism students! Thank you to our supportive community and thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to this event! Keep up the good work Golden Tigers!
