CDS Phoenix Rising
June 5th 2022
From The Assistant Director
Hello CDS!
We kicked off June with an action packed week full of fun and activities here at CDS. First off, a huge thank you goes out to the parents association for putting together such an amazing festival on Friday afternoon! The food and drinks were delicious, and the photo booth, karaoke station, and games were all a hit. It was great to see the community come together like that, and I know everyone is looking forward to more events like this in the future!
This week was also senior week, the time of year where we celebrate our upcoming graduates and recognize their contributions to the school. While many were excited about the trip to Lotte World, the highlight of the week was the introduction of what will hopefully become a tradition here at CDS, the senior walk! Our seniors dressed to impress in their graduation gowns and took a victory lap around all three divisions of the school, giving everyone the opportunity to cheer them on and congratulate them on their accomplishments. Our students and teachers from the FP made the day incredibly special by going above and beyond to celebrate our seniors. The handmade signs and music they prepared were heartwarming and inspiring. Thank you to everyone who was involved in making this event a success!
This was a busy week for everyone here at CDS, as we move closer to finals and our summer break. There were two college conversations held for our juniors, which were designed to help them get ahead of the game and make sure they are aware of what needs to be done as they begin to prepare for the college application process. We are fortunate to have a team of experienced college counselors here to support our students, and I encourage you to reach out to them if you have any questions or are in need of support!
Our student athletes challenged the teachers on both the basketball court and the soccer field this week, continuing a long standing tradition here at the school. Although the students played hard, the experience and athleticism of the teachers ultimately allowed them to end the week undefeated. Better luck next year students!
We were also treated to several performances of Ms. Stant’s theater production of Aladdin! It goes without saying that the cast and crew put on an incredible show for everyone who attended and deserve a huge round of applause for their efforts. We have some incredibly talented students in our drama program, and each year they put on something really special. Great work everyone, I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us next year!
It really makes me happy to see how our community has come together as we inch closer towards the end of the school year. I look forward to the challenges and opportunities that come with my new role as Assistant Director, and will work hard to ensure that our program remains strong and vibrant for years to come!

Weekly Round-Up
Aladdin was nothing short of Magical!
I am beyond thrilled to have directed this Spring’s musical, Aladdin. This production has been such a wonderful experience, since the very first rehearsal. To be cast in Aladdin, the students had to audition for their roles in the show, performing one of their favorite musical numbers. After the roles were selected, we rehearsed during Friday SOTs/CCs to learn the music, choreography and blocking for the show. The students were very committed to this production and even worked during their Lab and Phoenix times. Their commitment to excellence is evident in all of their work onstage in this production.
This show is also extraordinary in that it is a collaborative project between the Middle and High School students. The High School students mentored, coached and rehearsed alongside of their Middle School peers. It is an incredible sight to see 5th, 6th, and 7th graders building sets with juniors and seniors.
The set design and technical components of this show have been nothing short of magical. A senior and aspiring set designer worked side by side with me to design the set and props. We researched the fictional city of Agrabah, the origins of the story, Aladdin and decided on our design. The various attributes of the set come from the Middle East, India, Morocco, China and Thailand. We decided to have the costume design also echo this combination of cultures and styles as well. We really love how the set turned out to be so similar to the original design rendering and that the costumes complimented and vibrantly stood out against the set itself.
This production has truly been a labor of love for me. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching the students in rehearsals, guiding the design team during the Technical Theatre SOT and building a deep love for the theatrical arts in our students.
We hope you enjoyed the show!

Describe yourself!
Students described themselves in Korean class. The students wrote down various adjectives on the memo. (E.G. good, meticulous, lazy, etc). And they randomly put the memo on the classroom wall. They chose three adjectives that described themselves from the memo on the wall and wrote down in their study paper why they think so. Students also found words that fit their friends while doing these activities. These activities helped them understand themselves and others deeply.
In quarter 4, Korean class is about writing a letter of self-introduction. However, not many students know themselves better than I think. So, I wanted to provide students with an opportunity to understand themselves and others through these activities.

SOT Creation 2022-2023
Hello CDS!
The time has come to apply to create SOT clubs for next year. All clubs, regardless of their current status, must apply. This year the process will be through DalNet. Before applying, please keep the following information in mind.
Club leaders are required to submit a quarterly goal and a week-by-week outline for quarter one in their club proposal to be approved by the student union. This information will be used to evaluate clubs at the end of each quarter to determine if they are meeting expectations. Club leaders will also be required to submit evidence of club productivity as part of their evaluation, which may include funds raised, events held, practices held, volunteer hours given (documentation required), artwork produced, or any other relevant evidence.
If club goals are not met for a quarter then the club will be disbanded. Students from disbanded clubs may go to a study hall OR join a new club.
Clubs must produce one newsletter article per semester for the CDS community to learn about the great things they are doing in their student organization.
Clubs must also design a booth for the club festival.
Another piece of information to keep in mind is that students next year will have the option to leave during SOT 2 and SOT 4 if their parents call the high school office and give permission.
The club application form can be found on DalNet homepage. You are not required to seek out your own club supervisor for SOT’s, one will be allocated to your club at the beginning of the school year. The Student Union will then review the applications and create the club schedule. Following that, sign ups for clubs will begin.
Additionally, CDS clubs operating outside of SOT time will still be expected to adhere to the same requirements and approval of these clubs will come at a later date. Leaders of these clubs must:
Organize their own supervising teacher.
Submit a quarterly goal and outline of designated meeting times along with proposed activities.
Meet with their supervising teacher quarterly to evaluate the club's ability to meet their designated goals.
Produce one newsletter article per semester.
ALL CDS student organizations must have a teacher supervisor in order to be recognized as a school club. Clubs outside of school hours with no supervising teacher will not be recognized as official CDS organizations.
Thank you and please let me know if you have any questions.
Have a good day,
- Ms. Brady, HS Coordinator
