Black History Month
Black History Month (Thursday, February 1 through Thursday, February 29) is an annual celebration of achievements by Black people and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.
Black History Month - Who Said It? Interactive Display
FHS thought we would provide students with an opportunity to learn more about prominent black leaders during Black History Month, so we created in interactive display in the hallway between the two gyms.
Posted on the wall is a list of 20 such black leaders and 20 different quotes which are attributed to these individuals. Students are being provided with a QR Code which links to a Google Form where they can submit their answers for a chance to win some gift cards from local area vendors.

Other FHS Vocal Music Groups - 2024-25 Audition Information
Bella Voce is an all women’s choir for people who are interested in singing but want a more relaxed schedule. Due to its smaller size, this choir has a really strong sense of family and connection between all members. Many of our members often talk about how Bella Voce is a great stress reliever, a fun class to participate in, and is a great way to meet new people. On average this choir has 3 concerts a year, and sometimes more; with pep assemblies, football games, and visiting locations around town to perform! The audition process for this choir is a basic voice check. If you want to audition, email Mr. Wright (the choir director) at bwright@fentonschools.org and ask about Bella Voce.
Varsity Vocals is an advanced mixed choir for anybody interested in singing with friends. This choir is typically our biggest choir, and it’s a lot of fun. Like Bella Voce, this choir is an easier load but still challenging. Varsity Vocals, like Bella Voce, has an average of 3 concerts a year. On top of that, we are often asked to go to FHS pep rallies, sports games, and other places to perform! Varsity Vocals is a very interactive class where we don’t only sing, but we make great friends, get the chance to relax during the school day, and meet upperclassmen to help you out on your high school journey. The audition process for this choir is a basic voice check. If you want to audition, email Mr. Wright (the choir director) at bwright@fentonschools.org and ask about Varsity Vocals!

Strongest Bone in Anatomy & Physiology Class
If you have any of the following students, congratulate them on building the STRONGEST BONE in their Anatomy and Physiology class!
We had a friendly class competition and it was fun to see most all the students get nervous when testing their "bones" made of cardstock with weights but these students engineered the strongest bone given the same parameters as their classmates!

Therapy Dog Program Turns Five Years Old
FENTON, Mich. - It has been five years since the first therapy dog started walking the halls in a Fenton Area Public School. Now the program has grown to six dogs.
The staff says this is a needed program especially because many students have anxiety.
Five years ago, it was just Buddy who is a mini-Golden Doodle roaming the halls and providing comfort for the elementary kids, now the district has six therapy dogs, and they plan to add more.
Positivity Project: Theme of the Week: Cheering Others' Success
This week our school community will be focusing on the Other People Mindset of Cheering Others’ Successes. This means when other people succeed, I am happy for them and cheer them on.
Being happy for other people when they succeed isn’t always everyone’s initial reaction. Often, it’s easy to become jealous or envious of others’ victories -- or even to experience schadenfreude, which is deriving pleasure from witnessing (or learning about) another person’s misfortune. People who have these reactions to the success or misfortune of others are colloquially known as “haters.” It’s important to note that these are natural emotions and in small doses can be helpful in allowing us to see what we care about -- and motivate us to pursue those goals.
But making a commitment towards cheering on other people’s successes can be a great way to improve our own health, happiness, and relationships. People can take active steps to be more genuinely happy for the achievements of others. Ways to do this include; telling others about the success of your modest friend; noticing when your reaction to a sibling’s success is envy or jealousy -- and asking yourself why that is; reminding yourself that appreciating the excellence in another is a character strength; asking your successful teammates and classmates what they do to prepare for games or tests.
Being supportive of people who succeed is good for our mental, physical, and emotional well-being and when people cheer each other on it begins a reciprocal process that forges stronger relationships. Those relationships are the foundation for a strong culture in teams, schools, and businesses.

Online Protection for Children
Are your children safe while online? Michigan families, especially minors, are becoming inundated with advertisements from alcohol, tobacco, pornography, illegal drugs and gambling marketers through different internet and cell phone inboxes. To reduce these influences on youth, the State of Michigan offers a free program to stop adult advertisements from reaching e-mails, text messages, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter. The Michigan Child Protection Registry, like the federal Do Not Call List, is a free do-not-contact service for Michigan’s families and can be located at www.ProtectMIChild.com."
