The Floral Falcon Flyer
September 5, 2021
A Peek into Floral this Week... Kindergarten students in Mrs. Rosenzweig's class will start their day with a check-in on how they are feeling. This routine helps build students' self-awareness so they can learn to make responsible decisions to get what they need as learners.
Dear Floral Families,
What a joyful first week of school! The smiles on students' faces were plentiful as they entered their new classroom, connected with an old friend or Floral teacher they haven't seen in over a year, and sat down to their first Morning Meeting with their new classmates and teacher. Some first day "favorites" that students shared with us as we visited them this week included:
- getting to play with my friends at recess again
- sitting with friends at the table during lunch
- playing on the playground with friends
- chicken patty sandwiches for lunch
- seeing last year's teacher
Except for the chicken patty sandwich (which we know firsthand is delicious), the overarching theme of students' "first day favorites" was all about connecting with people. The held true for the Floral teachers and staff, too. We couldn't be more grateful to be all together again as a school community- THANK YOU for all of your efforts to prepare your children for a safe, healthy, and happy start to this school year. They are amazing little humans. :)
The PTO treated the full Floral faculty to a delicious lunch from Wegman's this week - we are so grateful to this group of parents and caregivers who work hard to support teachers with having the resources they need to enrich learning for all students. But this group is so much more than that. Their mission is to promote a school community where all families feel a strong sense of belonging and inclusion in our school. We hope you will consider being a part of this team this year in whatever capacity your schedule allows. The more diversity we have in this group to plan for the year ahead, the more likely we are to reach our goal of belonging and inclusion for all. Please see the note below from the PTO for information about their first meeting via Zoom. Hope to see you there!
Enjoy the long weekend; we can't wait to see your children when they return to school on Tuesday.
Sincerely,
Lisa and Gina

Updates from the Food Services Department
Shrewsbury Public Schools is providing free meals to all students under the USDA’s Child Nutrition Programs (Seamless Summer Option). Children enrolled in the district are eligible for these free meals regardless of their eligibility status through June 30, 2022.
Free and Reduced Price Meal Applications are used to determine free or reduced cost eligibility for many school programs: sports, transportation, music etc. if there is financial need. To qualify for reduced costs for programs you must fill out a Free and Reduced Application. Applications are available online at: https://www.lunchapp.com/. Applications must be submitted this school year by October 8,2021 to continue eligibility. If you received a letter from the Food Service Department stating your children were eligible for free or reduced meals in school year 2021-2022 as a result of a Direct Certification from the Department of Health and Human Services for school year 2021-2022, you do not need to fill out an online application.
Applications will be accepted at any time during the school year for new applicants as the need arises for families. If you need an application at any time during the school year visit our web pages http://schools.shrewsburyma.gov/foodsvc/ and fill out the online application: https://www.lunchapp.com/ . Eligibility is governed by guidelines set by the Federal Government. A notification will be sent to all families stating what program they qualify for. If you need help filling out the application, or have questions about the Free and Reduced Meal Program:
Please call the Food Service Department at 508-841-8819 or email Beth Nichols the Food Service Director at bnichols@shrewsbury.k12.ma.us
