What Seniors Wish Their Parents Knew
Editor's Note: Senior Seminar students concluded their semester course by listing what they wish parents knew about graduating seniors and their final year of high school. We'll feature their ideas here.
by Audrey Napolitano
1. It is okay to have an honest conversation about family finances.
It is important to let your child know where your family stands financially. There’s nothing wrong with sitting down and having a conversation with your child about how much your family plans on contributing to their future expenses (education, living situations, etc). Being informed of family finances may help influence their decisions after high school.
2. Seniors want you to listen to how they feel
Having someone to listen to them psychologically means a great deal. Sit down with your senior every week for a certain period of time and discuss how they’re feeling. Listening to their plans helps seniors process a decision by conceptualizing their ideas and feelings out-loud.
3. Seniors deserve gratitude
Be proud of your senior for how far they’ve gotten. Make sure they are given gratitude for working so hard to reach this milestone, because it wasn’t easy.
4. Seniors want to make informed decisions
Make sure to do your own research and stay informed with your child’s decisions without dictating whether they’re right or wrong in your eyes. By doing your own research, you are also taking stress away from their already busy schedules. It’s always important to begin touring colleges, making sure the college is the right fit, and has the right major/s for your child helps to make informed decisions.
5. Seniors need support for whatever their long term goals are beyond high school
Whatever your student’s plans may consist of after high school, it is important to be their #1 supporter. This will help you to understand how to cater to their needs during their senior year. Whether they plan on pursuing an education beyond high school, or not, you must respect whatever their decision is. It’ll do more harm than good to challenge your child’s life decisions beyond high school. Whether you agree or disagree with their plans, it is important to be by their side as they make these life changing decisions.
6. You’re part of a team
This is your student’s decision to make. You must be there for moral support, but the decision is ultimately theirs, not yours. It is important not to push a student to go to a college that you went to, or wished you went to when they may not be interested in going there. There’s a fine line between your child going to you to help process options, and you telling them you want them to go to a certain school. You’re not living through your children, so it’s best to remember that they get to dictate their life goals whether you agree with them or not.
7. You must separate how you’re feeling from how your senior’s feeling
Many parents may become emotional at the thought of their children leaving and going off to college. It is important to keep in mind that you have these emotions, and they are separate feelings from what your child may be feeling. People process emotions differently, which is why it’s important to keep sight of how you’re feeling compared to your child.
8. Be patient
Students shouldn’t feel rushed when making such a monumental decision. This decision is meant to find a student at the right time, whether it’s in October or in April. You don’t want your student to be making hasty decisions that they’ll regret in the future. They need to make the decision that feels
right to them, when it feels right to them.
9. Be positive
Creating a positive atmosphere for your child is essential always, but especially while they’re making their college decision. Creating a positive environment helps an individual to feel more comfortable to not only communicate with you about how they’re feeling, but also allows them to better process information. A positive environment decreases stress levels, which in turn allows students to enjoy their senior years. You don’t want your child to remember their stressful senior year in the future, but rather their exciting and memorable senior year.
10. Inspire them to be who they want to be
It is important to not only support, but also inspire your child to be the individual they dream of being. By inspiring them, you’re giving them the opportunity they need to go achieve their dreams. Just remember, no dream nor goal is ever unattainable.
