Weekly Update November 4, 2022
Head Cheetah's Message
Families,
What a wonderful week! It began with seasonal festivities, and ended with the PTO Sponsored Pasta Dinner event! It was a pleasure to see so many families in attendance. Café Memorial was serving delicious meals, and our faculty waitstaff was hustling to attend to our customers! An excellent time was had by everyone.
Don’t forget to turn back your clocks before heading to bed on Saturday night. Our students will all get a much needed additional hour of sleep.
Thank you for your partnership,
Joey & Andrea

Second and Third Grade Literacy
Grade 2 and 3 Update
Second and third grade scholars have been hard at work during the first two months of school. Second grade readers will be wrapping up their first reading unit, Second Grade Reading Growth Spurt. During this unit, students learned to take charge of their reading by using strategies to read unknown words, understand author’s craft, and build big ideas about the books they read. Third graders are completing their reading unit, Building a Reading Life: Stamina, Fluency and Engagement. This unit supports students’ transition into third grade readers' workshop and helps students begin to take on determining the main idea, retelling, and summarizing what they have read. Students also worked on building stamina for reading, thinking, talking and writing about what they read.
Students have been working to publish the personal narratives they have been working on over the past two months. Published work may be written or typed and students often add illustrations to support the creation of their stories. You may even find some of their published pieces at our Writing Celebration at the end of the school year! If you have a child who wants to continue narrative writing at home, help get some ideas flowing by talking about fun fall activities they have recently done. Some ideas include:
Going on a hike
Carving a pumpkin
Trick or Treating
A sporting event they went to/participated in
Apple/pumpkin picking
Library News
Hi Cheetah families!
It has been a busy month in the Memorial School library! Students have been practicing their library skills each week and are becoming more independent library users.
We have a book fair coming up at the end of November, more information to follow.
See below for grade level classroom expectations.
PreK students are enjoying a variety of read-alouds and songs with the themes of friendship and gratitude. We have been having fun with a new round of rhymes, including a student favorite, “popcorn”.
Kindergarten is working on discussing the relationship between illustrations and text. We have read “Go Away Big Green Monster '' to aid in the conversation. This month students will be reading Cold Turkey, Thanks for Nothing, and a Turkey for Thanksgiving to connect with our monthly POG connection, Empathy.
First grade is finishing their introduction to Digital Citizenship. We have talked about what the internet is and what kinds of things we can do with the internet. The message of these lessons has been that using the internet is a big responsibility and we need adult supervision when using it. Next we will begin some activities with the theme of empathy and gratitude using the book Our Table by Peter Reynolds.
Second grade is in the middle of our unit on digital citizenship. We are learning about the types of information that are safe to put online versus what is unsafe. We have learned that we should never share our username/passwords, birthday, school, or address online. Most classes are finishing up with Google’s game, Interland, and have really enjoyed it. Next we will be viewing the Cyber 5 rules. We are also midway through the book, Emily’s Fortune.
Third grade has finished up their digital citizenship unit. They have reviewed the types of information that is safe to put online versus what is unsafe. They have discussed how to create a safe and strong username. We are now beginning our coding unit, using a new program called Code Monkey. All classes are also midway through the 1st book in the Spiderwick Chronicles.

Nurses Notes
Dear parents/guardians,
Please make sure your child has a spare change of seasonally appropriate clothing and shoes to keep at school. Occasional accidents happen or students go down a wet slide or fall in the mud or a puddle out at recess. We appreciate your assistance.
Dig It!
Garden Club
Memorial’s Garden Club was busy this week planting garlic and picking radishes from the garden for the other students to taste. Radish slices were sent out to the 1st through 3rd grade classrooms so that every student could smell, touch and taste a radish. Not surprisingly, they weren’t very popular, but some students did like them, and most were willing to try them. Kids have a lot more taste buds than adults do so often they don’t like really strong flavors, but the more they try different foods, the more they get used to different flavors and the more willing they will be to eat a wider variety of foods in the future!

Therefore it shall be the policy of the Board that bullying and/or teen dating violence committed against a student by another student is prohibited. The Board believes that a school environment in which students feel safe, supported, engaged and helpfully challenged is optimal for learning and healthy development. The Board seeks an environment in which students and adults feel socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically safe; an environment that is free of harassment, intimidation, teen dating violence and bullying. Our website provides links to various policies and reporting forms including our Safe School Climate Plan. Hard copies are also available in our main office. If at any point you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to building administration for further assistance.
Attendance Matters
